View Full Version : Position of turbo?

Currently trying to make my bugdet turbo setup using a standard mani and the downpipe off a saab, i'm having to space the manifold out an inch as the actuator hits the block.
But i'm not too sure about the way the turbo sit's as the outlet points up? is there anyway to move the housing so it points down? or should i cut my losses and buy a manifold?

if you loosen the housings you can rotate the turbo where you need them

Cheers :y: Does it make a difference if the turbo's at such an angle? ^^

The core needs to sit with something like upto 15deg off level but you can rotate the core within the compressor and exhaust body's

Ideally best to mock stuff up in the bay if you can, makes less risk of error, also you don't NEED the hot side on that side, mine isn't, can flip it other way if wanted, want to keep exhaust as far as poss from alternator, or make a heat shield

spot on above, that downpipe looks like it would fit right under the sump cut out if you had hot side similar to blackies.

oo, didn't know that, cheers, i'll see how it looks :y: I won't get anything set in stone until i've seen it in the bay first :y: can't put the new lump in until i have a clutch and gearbox, and modified sump :)

as said you want it straight as you can plus if you have dp on box side not alternator will be easier to make as looking at that if you position it right you would only need 1 straight bit of pipe from exhaust to come to the front and then a 90 degree pipe straight up on to the the bit of saab one you have now if that makes sense

Yeah, just need to spin the compressor house round a bit :)

Right i've turned the compressor, and put the hot side on the other side, downpipe sits lovley, only problem i have now is i only have room for pipes off the compressor for the air filter if i tilt the turbo

Surly this is tilted to much? any suggestions what i can do to the manifold? might just have to buy the ebay one

that's to much tilt
what I would do is as much as you prob don't wan't to cut the dp where the flexi join is, move the setup over to the box side slightly and straighten it up rest of dp will still be easy to weld up from there
or have it straight but at an angle a bit like blackies that way you get clearance for intake side of turbo then plus the outlet you can have point straight down should be dead easy to sort boost pipe routing etc then

get the flange off te standard downpipe weld a new pipe from that to turbo flange positioned roughly where you want the turbo

Twist the turbo I angle it so you can get it in, take a look at pages one and two of my thread for ideas if you don't get me
Still can't see pics ATM so I can't comment further lol

Only thing i can think of doing is get 2 90 degree bends welded onto the mani/orig downpipe flange, that way the turbo can sit at the same sort of angle as blackies, and sit straight, but would 2 bends start to cause lag?
