Wouldnt bother with the vr6 personally jay. It's a heavy old lump and produces awful power for a 2.8/9. Noise is worth it but abf can be just as powerful ad cheaper to run. Vr's are useless without a charger lol

i was winding him up earlier tom when he bought it for me to have a look at, yep VR6 sounds the bizz but my mk2 just wanted to plow on with all the weight out front. Better off with a 16V for an old school conversion.

Shut your whore mouth, it's worth it for the noise alone!!

What's the 1300 like to drive? I've always guessed they'd be painfully underpowered??

Big bumpers, decent wheels, dont go bbs it's to common and drop it on its balls.

Mine was ok up to 40 lol. That was about it.
Fuel economy however, 600 miles to a tank on a motorway run

Ohhhh god, Tom nailed it. Upto 40 is fine, then you need a couple of days to get to 60mph

Just abit of my VW history. My first VW was identical to this in every way... this is how it looked when it was finished...

http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g439/L1QuiD/ef2cd940.jpg

No big bumpers this time. Complete shell rebuild with small bumpers this time around..

Also, this car is £600 a year cheaper than the Saxo when it comes to insurance! It's paid for itself.

Should of bought a jetta tho. ;)

It's only about 20 a month but the waiting list is huge and you'll have no power or lights.

I've always liked these for some reason. What are the plans?

Plans are to clean up and smooth the shell. Car will be painted a Chocolate brown with some cream Banded steel wheels.

Looking forward to this as I actually have the money to do it properly. Just waiting for the Saxo to sell and then there'll be a proper spending spree that will include the coilovers and wheels!

Fuck wheels and lows, buy a £500 vr6 and swop it all over..

As said above, VR6 sounds immense but they're underpowered for the engine size and they weigh an absolute tonne.

One of the perks of this car is the fuel economy and insurance savings. However, things always change in time... ;)

MiniGibbo
22nd February 2012, 22:07
How would fitting a new engine affect insurance?

I'll give you the fuel thing, you'd need shares in bp to run one daily lol...

Not really an update.

Had the call today to say all is well with the Golf. Collecting tomorrow.

Saxo is now on Pistonheads and if it isn't gone by the 10th March, it'll be going on eGay. That then allows me to purchase the coil overs and banded steels. Bodywork/paint is scheduled for the two weeks starting July 8th.

It's here!!!

Collected earlier, driven 80 miles so far and has not missed a beat. Amazingly comfortable to drive and not quite as slow as I was expecting.

Only issue I have had was doing 75mph down a dual carriage way and then putting it into fifth gear. Only problem being it doesn't have a fifth gear. Ended up in third at a ridiculous amount of revs!

Photo time!

Not really progress, just a good going over.

Decided it could do with a good going over before Sundays trip. The trims were starting to look abit dated so got myself some black aerosol and have them a good going over. So far I've done the bumpers, side trims and grille. Still need to do the splitter.

Brand new JOM coilovers at a bargain price that was to good to pass up. Jugglyluggs convinced me to buy them so I'm blaming him!

Hopefully fitted a week on friday.

On top of this, I've decided on a new set of wheels. Now looking for a set of VW Beetle wheels with the chrome caps, banded of course!

Wow, done quicker than I thought. Good news! The coilovers have full camber adjustment which I didn't realise. This made me very happy! What also made me happy was the guy saying "That car is ridiculously clean underneath"

Only down side is that it needs a full exhaust. It isn't connected at all :( No monies means it'll have to wait. It sounds like a tank!

Now, this needs winding down a little bit more as it needed raising just to get it off the ramp.

banded steelies.

that's all I'm saying...

GolfJay
13th March 2012, 17:43
Right, for people saying it isnt low, the photos do not do it justice. They also still have to settle.

Unfortunately I've already knocked the exhaust off two mounts :(

The ride is shocking, it's just completely solid.

Next, for temporary purposes I'm fitting 20mm spacers on the back and 10mm spacers on the front. We also discovered today that the coilovers allow camber adjustment so there'll be some camber to come and MAYBE a little lower

Next couple of months, the current steels are being sand blasted, banded and painted.

Looking at the car today I've decided to be a complete idiot. The front end is going lower for a slightly flatter look. However, this can't be done just yet as I'll need a down-pipe fabricating to make the new exhaust sit slightly closer to the car.

http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g439/L1QuiD/225b620d.jpg

Driving into Birmingham yesterday and hit a pot hole quite hard. It flung the car onto two wheels and lande so heavily that it's dented the bottom of the toolbox that was in the boot. Ridiculously hard ride.

Next up is pressed plates with the front bolted to the splitter.

Well, the Golfs new shoes are ready for pick up!

Go back about 3 weeks. Talking to a local body shop owner when he mentioned that he had a set of rather rare wheels, complete with caps and even a key ring that came with the wheels many years ago... At this point he told me he'd never sell them :(

Went back today and cheekily asked "So, fancy selling me those wheels?" and got back "Well, for £xxx you can have them". Deal struck immediately and now just waiting to go and fetch them! I warn you, they're very marmite!

http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-JCOWA3UW.jpg

These aren't the actual wheels but they are what I'm having! Plans for a full refurb on them with a proper teddy like this...

Cheers for the replies. I always said they were marmite so I expected the mixed reaction.

Now the bad news. First of all I can barely turn the wheels due to the arches so it's being raised temporarily. Already booked in for stretched tyres on the 10th to try and cure the problem.

Next issue, the car fell off the jack while my foot was under it. Subframe landed on my foot crushing it :( Loads of pain and lesson learnt - I need some axle stands!

Refurb and paint will be a while yet :(

Right, proper post now.

Fetched these earlier on. Need a good refurb which I'd planned earlier. Stuck them on, lowered the jack and it literally sat on the tyres. Couldn't move.

I then raised tthe car about 20mm meaning it will move but with very little lock. Drove it around trying to find a body shop that'd roll the arches. Turns out they want £200 to do two arches without paint or anything.

Stopped off at a tyre center that had a really good look and decided that the best route was to stretch tyres with a lower profile and that MAY solve the issue. Booked in for the 10th for those.

Unfortunately I was a complete idiot and did it all without axle stands. Got what I deserved when the car slipped off the jack with the subframe landing on my foot. Luckily a passing van stopped and jacked the car up again. Ripped trainers and alot of pain but I think i'm ok lol

May be the photos but your wheels look lost in the wheel arches..

Looking at it yesterday, I thought the same. The rears look like they sit further in the arches than the front. Camber shims are planned anyway which should push them out slightly.

MiniGibbo
18th April 2012, 15:47
If you add negative camber on the rear itll make it worse.. you either want less camber or spacers to push the wheel out closer to the arch.

Car is going in on the 23rd for two stretched tyres on the front. Hopefully it means I'll be able to turn again. Having 165's fitted instead of the 185's currently so I'm hoping for a nice bit of stretch.

GolfJay

Nothing to really tell you about. Tyres have moved forward to tomorrow or Monday. Only the fronts will be stretched until the 10th so balloons on the back, stretched on the front :(

Here's a photo shop of what should be happening:

It will be a slightly lighter brown. Didn't want it this dark. The bonnet and roof will be slightly creamier rather than the white it looks.

The car looks mint, but those wheels, i cant quite grasp the consept, yeah youv done a fucking awesome job of refurbing them, but seriously ? driving around with TEDDY BEARS on your wheels ? i cant fathem it out, just seems a little gay / peadophileish surly the novelty will wear off and ule think fuck, i look like a twat with these on my car lol ?

No disrespect like as they have been refurbed pretty awesome only ever seen silver ones
Just my opinion as i think the money could have been better spent for example som lm reps or somthing ?

As said above really.

With LMs, RMs or RSs it'd be just another Golf on BBS/Replicas.

You just said it yourself, you haven't seen another set like mine. On top of that, the attention these wheels get is ridiculous! Most people tend to shy away from commenting on peoples car as they walk by but the amount of times I've had "Those wheels are amazing" makes it worth all the work.

On top of that, As Tom said, original Teddies are rare as fuck, especially in this condition.

Not me having a go Sam.

Lol at the LM comment. Pretty sure you can't get LM's in 15/16''?

Also, they aren't cheap!

Teddys look good. I was dubious, but you seem to have pulled it off.

edit: didn't see reps. *shudders*

Only minor detail I'd change would be to get a nice new front plate on there. Will get rid of the rust marks where the screws and the wee advert below the lettering :y:

Now planning on going lower this over the next week or so ;)

New job means I know longer depend on my car for travelling to work. It also means I can make it less practical :D

GolfJay
15th May 2012, 19:44
Right, girlfriend has had a new flash for her camera today so I thought i'd get some photos of just how low the car is. Please excuse the whiteness of the photos, the flash was brighter than I thought.

The bodywork makes it look rather low. THIS shows just how low it is...

Is that on flat ground? Underneath looks alot lower than this picture..
http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g439/L1QuiD/DSC05865.jpg

Or have you lowered it more since then?

GolfJay
16th May 2012, 00:01
It is indeed on flat ground. If you look on the picture you quoted you can see a slight buldge behind the front wheel, that's how the subframe sits.

Can't really see just how low it is in the above photo as its so dark under there.

16th May 2012, 00:06

You're a fruitcake for wanting it that low!

GolfJay
16th May 2012, 00:09
That is actually the sub-frame that sits that low :(

In my eyes it just isn't low enough from the sides so I'm now looking into possible custom work to have the sub-frame raised so I can get the sills down lower.

According to Edition38 the only way I'm going to get it lower is to extend the sills :( or a full body drop :(

Can't see it happening to be honest.

There is another option but you wont like it.

Big bumpers and the sill covers will bring it closer to the deck. But trust me jay, stop worrying about how low it is and concentrate on something different. it looks great, time to get started on the interior or engine bay.
