I have a mk1 westie with a a 421,decat,race tube and sniper back box and I was wondering why it won't POP on down shifts, I m8 has a 1.1 with just a decat and its popping like crazy

What can i do to make it pop

on my furio 1.4 basicly same as your westcoast but mine mk2 shape , ive currently got mk1 manifold and downpipe and a straight pipe from downpipe to a supersprint 2" back box and it pops all the time and once the engine is very warm its super loud lol i did have a sportex back box (same as your sniper , just different name) and it would quitely pop now and again

theres nothing else really too it with it de-catted it should pop , my mates corsa c sri pops and thats just a cat back system so dunnoo but its a sign your engine isnt over fueling as no unburnt fuel is being wacked into the hot exhaust

Take your lambda out, may run, may not. It will over fuel making it bang.

willis54
13th March 2012, 00:12

Wat are the other options then

SAXO8VYO
13th March 2012, 00:40
to be honest if it aint going to pop it wont , just proves your cars fueling is spot on which is good even though you have a de cat ect... , other options get a custom map to make it run like shit and pop lol

willis54
13th March 2012, 01:01
True if it was going to pop it wud

My VTR has a De-Cat Magnex system from the manifold back and even when hot it doesn't really pop, you get the slight little one when lifting off the throttle and a bit of a rasp but other than that nothing but a nice noise :)

It's probably down to your fuelling being spot on, which is a good thing lol (I am guessing your system still sounds the dogs bollox though?)

willis54
13th March 2012, 01:12
Oh don't get me wrong its nice and raspy sounds mint just wanted a pop or two lol

kennym1987

mines pops when hot. no lambda, no cat, 4-2-1, 1.1 center section and backbox

willis54
13th March 2012, 12:13
Will it run without a lambda sensor

kennym1987

Got a ss manifold, sportex decat, ss race tube n sniper back box 3" tip

13th March 2012, 14:08
Mine pops and i have a standard manifold and a cat. Just shows your car isn't overfuelling. It can't be a bad thing! :)

Mine pops with a cat or decat on, makes no difference really but then I do run rallye/xsi injectors. If you really want it to pop, try some larger injectors or a different FPR but it will overfuel

jones91
13th March 2012, 14:33
I bet that's fu**ing loud with no silencer, no cat and sniper back box

Sniper backboxes dont really pop very much, I would try to get a supersprint or kam racing backbox even though it will be a bit more quiet

I've also gone 6 months without a lambda with no problems if u want to overfuel

willis54
13th March 2012, 14:45
Oh its loud but wen crusing its not to loud, if unplugging lambda won't damage it I will do it i know it will just over fuel

Oh maybe get a piggy back chip to make ecu overfuel

Prickle
13th March 2012, 15:45
can i ask why do you want it to pop?

willis54
13th March 2012, 15:54
I've spent over 700 pound on the exhaust system expecting it pop and it doesn't

Does it not take some time for the exhaust to be "run in" ?

willis54
13th March 2012, 15:57
Sometimes yes but its been over 3 months now

£700 on?

Sure the 421, decat pipe and budget backbox "sniper" wouldnt of cost that or you got majorly mugged. :zainy:

Sorry to barge in on the thread, but i read this whole thing and alot of you mention decat - i know what that is, just wondering is it really worth doing, as i only a 1.1 eastcoast mk1 (for now) ??? Also what are the advantages to it.. cheers.

willis54
13th March 2012, 16:07
Less restriction the exhaust gases n increase the pulling powwr of the vehicle through the rev range

350 on 421,
200 on decat and race rube
100 on back box

Prickle
13th March 2012, 16:08
Not over £700+ then?

willis54
13th March 2012, 16:10
Ok 650 not far from it though

Prickle
13th March 2012, 16:15
I would of went for a different backbox tbh but thats just me..

Gandi699
13th March 2012, 16:18
700 quid on a sniper exhaust, decat and 421?!

willis54
13th March 2012, 16:18
Wat wud u suggest

Gandi699
13th March 2012, 16:20
Get a decent cam and engine in there tbh

devilsadvocate
13th March 2012, 16:43
You paid £700 for that lot?? More money than sense...

Iirc if the exhaust is new, it needs to build up a layer of carbon coating before it will pop....could be talking crap but im sure I read this on a thread a while back.

My Janspeed and 421 was virtually new and didn't pop but I have noticed a few in the last week or so and the inside of the pipes are now layered black.

Heatwrap your mani mate that will pop more

Skitts123
13th March 2012, 19:33
Should of got a supersprint backbox they pop alot

luk3matth3ws
13th March 2012, 19:34
got a manifold, decat and straight pipe on mine and it barely pops lol quite dissapointed but as everyone else is saying, shows its fueling correctly i had a 1.2 clio with a cat back a few years ago and it used to pop LIKE ABSOLUTE FUCK! lol

willis54
13th March 2012, 20:15
How will heat wrapping help

Furio-Gaz-Saxo
13th March 2012, 20:31
My 1.4 has got 4-2-1 manifold straight through no silencer no cat and won't pop at all

jones91
13th March 2012, 20:56
Heat wrapping won't really do much at all, best ways are as either different backbox or overfuelling

You could change your standard fpr and put a 4 bar fpr in, but you will use about 30% more fuel

willis54
13th March 2012, 22:29
Where do you get a 4 bar fpr

Gandi699
13th March 2012, 22:38
ebay last time I looked for one

willis54
13th March 2012, 23:02
We talkin about the regulator in the fuel rail

Gandi699
13th March 2012, 23:05
Yep thats the one

jones91
13th March 2012, 23:07
Can't send links on my phone but search on eBay for 4 bar fuel pressure regulator, or adjustable fuel pressure regulator and set the adjustable one between 3.5 - 4 bar

What do you do about blanking the hole left in the fuel rail though, providing its not using the FPR'd fuel pump setup?

willis54
13th March 2012, 23:14
Is it just a standard replacement part, i mean take old out push new one in

jones91
13th March 2012, 23:27
The fixed 4 bar is a standard replacement as far as I know, the adjustable one is a little more complicated, as you need to re-locate it to mount it on somewhere, due to size and weight.

I got an adjustable one on mine but a mate fitted it so can't really help in that aspect sorry

willis54
13th March 2012, 23:28
Might just get a fixed regulator then

13th March 2012, 23:44
Pull away in 1st gear casually.

Then let the engine over run at around 2800/ 3K RPM then casually change into second.

This is the only way mine will pop. Its not until you start hitting high revs and changing gear, then mine pops.. I'm not too keen on that though.

willis54
13th March 2012, 23:56
Aren't some fpr fitted under rear seat, where wud mine be

boz
14th March 2012, 00:09
stick your lambda in a sleeve and plug the lambda hole up. will run just fine ;D

Gandi699

1.4 westie 1999

Gandi699
14th March 2012, 01:08
Doesn't matter too much, the FPRs fit either the rail or the in the pump setup above the tank. Can be a a bit tricky to push the one in the tank in though and get the clip over but nothing you cant do in 5 minutes and push it in with a clamp/caliper piston tool.

Is ur a mk1 or mk2

i have a mk2 with mk1 16v engine

Sorry to barge in on the thread, but i read this whole thing and alot of you mention decat - i know what that is, just wondering is it really worth doing, as i only a 1.1 eastcoast mk1 (for now) ??? Also what are the advantages to it.. cheers.

do what i did and get a center pipe from a later 1.1 - cheap decat

Skitts123
14th March 2012, 11:03
Heatwrap will help slightly, it will keep all the heat from the manifold and will go out of the back so more pops. Well it worked for my mate, my mates corsa pops and bangs more than mine and it's a 1.2 but it's 16v and overfueling so that's why.

4bar on my mk2 vtr, did bugger all apart from bog down under acceleration not worth the time and money Imo:wall:
