View Full Version : Saxo 1.1 to 1.6 vtr conversions?

Hi guys, i own a 1.1 saxo and i love it, the problem i am having is i need more power.
I decided to do an engine conversion and try the 1.6 vtr because i was told there wasnt much work that would need to be done to get it running.
What i need to know is if this is correct and if it is what is the minimum amount of work i would have to do such as wiring looms or ecu or fuel lines infact. :p

in fitting an engine there is no difference between fitting a 1.1, vtr or vts engine its all the same amount of work hence why everyone fits 16v's and vtr engines are dirt cheap
minimum what you need is an engine (with manifolds and alternator etc), loom and unlocked ecu from a car of a similar age to yours, if you go 16v or fit an early black top vtr engine then 99% of the time you need to fit a fuel return pipe back to the tank, thats the only difference, but most people (including me) just block it off
what year is your car?
you can use 1.1 gear box and shafts, however vtrs and vts's have better drive shafts to a 1.1 so id recomend fitting these, if you want better mpg then fit a vtr box, or if you want better acceleration keep the 1.1 box

i often wondered what happens when you block the fuel return off, as more fuel is always sent to the rail than is actually needed, so what happens to it? :afro:

just sits there lol i dont really know, but most 8v engines dont have a return so im guessing its no different

Thats true, unless it has a higher fuel delivery rate, but id block it off aswell tbh, sod plumbing a return line back to the tank :homme:

vtrs have a higher fuel pressure iirc, when i first did my conversion i was running two FPR's lol the oem vtr one under the bench adn the oem vts one in the fuel rail lol so i had fuel coming down at 3.5 bar instead of 3 bar which a vts is supposed to have lol my blocked return has lasted over two years only popped off once i did loose about £20 of fuel though and broke down and had to walk to a petrol station :(
tbh fitting a fuel return is actually really easy all the clips are already there in the shell, jst need to get a fuel return line from a breaking vts, i really need to get round to doing it now ive fitted my bodies i want everything how it should be :)

being a 1.1 there is a good chance it will have a return. mine did

My car is a 2000 plate...
i would probably go for a 16v tbh and would i be right that the 1.6 gearbox would be better motorway speed / high speed low revs? :D

being a 2000 plate you should have just a simple single plug engine, therefore make sure you get one of those

Ive got an X reg 1.1
Engine (with manifolds and alternator)
Loom and unlocked ecu (Would it be easier to get this from the same VTS donor car?)
I'd be using the standard 1.1 box so i wouldnt need a new one. Is there anything I've missed?

rad hoses, heater matrix pipes, 200mm clutch, vts/gti throttle cable. make sure your loom is from a vts as the gti one has 2 plugs. oh and make sure your loom is for the correct year to save the hassle of splicing. can't really think of anything else just now. you can use parts from your 1.1 engine. i used my alt and starter and a couple of sensors

as rule, the same year the same plugs. just buy a VTR lump with ECU, manifolds, alternator and anything else its lacking and it will drop in

maniacmatt i have a vts engine for sale, 80k, timing belt done and new water pump...
comes with starter motor, alternator, manifold, could throw in a gear box... comes with ecu, keys, and i have a loom somewhere... if your interested... needs an airbox
