Looking oil cooler/ remote filter setups.

Going to be on a boosted car running about 250atf.

Thinking a 16row oil cooler (is this too big or is the adequate as read 13row is enough for 200bhp max) -

This is the sandwich plate and mushroom cover looking at (guessing this is the correct m20 thread for bolting to the engine?)-
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mocal-Take-Off-Plate-M20-Male-Side-Ports-/300640106069?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item45ff8bf655

Then this remote filter-

Going to be using AN10 hosing and hose ends from torques.

These to use for sandwich plate to AN10 hose connectors-
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-AN10-10-1-2-BSP-BSPP-Straight-Adapter-/150778799471?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item231b1de56f

Finally these for the oil cooler to AN10 90degree hose connectors-
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AN-10-10AN-Male-1-2-BSP-BSPP-Female-Adapter-Mocal-Setrab-Oil-Cooler-/160686833710?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2569ae802e

I think this is all the correct parts to go together, just dont want to buy it and parts to be wrong.

I'm on my phone so bear with me if I've missed something.

What about a thermostat? I was going to run a thermostatic sandwich plate on mine and keep the existing screw on filter, can't see any need on running a remote filter if you have the room. Just a thought.

There's no need to remote your filter away as far as I know - just seems like extra piping for no reason.

IMO its wise to buy a plate with a thermostat, else you'll be cooling your oil even when cold.
Of course this requires a thermostat elsewhere in the system if you're remoting the filter.

There isnt the room with a turbo and downpipe in the way.

With a remote filter and having a thermostat sandwich plate the oil isnt going to get through to the filter until the oil will go over 80degrees. Not what you need on any engine tbh.

I spoke to colin atspeed about this abit ago and he said itl just take abit longer till oils warm without the thermostat.

Turbo will get it up to temp quick enough, you can always mess about with the positioning/angle of the cooler if its over cooling. I've heard the thermostatic plates are generally a bit shite anyway and as you say don't want that with a remote filter!!

I would speak directly with mocal (think auto) about what you need as they're really helpful and will help you spec everything up. If you measure where you want everything and the hose lengths needed they'll even make them up for you.

The lengths of hoses I won't know until I have everything mocked up so I'm just going to buy enough and make them up myself.

Think a oil temp gauge is a necessity so can get the temperature correct.

16v sump has the fitting for oil temp sensor, or get a remote filter head with a tapped hole for one, or do what I did and get an insert for the sensor to go in the sump drain plug

I'll work something out for the sensor. I can sort something out at work.

13 or 16 row oil cooler?

I dont think a 13 row will be big enough to cool the oil down when the engines being used hard.

Anyone if the oil sgould run through the remote filter before it reaches the oil cooler or after?

As theres a left to right and right to left remote filter.

Need help on this people. Need to know if to get left to right or right to left remote filter?

Ive seen a picture of how to set it up and was left to right so goes through filter before oil cooler but think it would be better for the oil to go through the oil filter after cooler just before goes back into the engine. Should the feed to go the top of oil cooler if mounted horizontal?

Which is the output on the sandwich plate? The one to the right as your looking straight at it?

Surely it doesn't matter?!

I wasnt sure which would be best, for oil to filter after the cooler or not.

Surely it doesnt matter as the oil wont get any dirtier or cleaner running through the cooler.

On a practical note id imagine before so that any debris in the oil is filtered out instead of gathering in the cooler?

Sounds good, definitely get pictures up in your progress thread when all together!!

Anyone know when mounting the oil cooler in the pas arch, does it have to be at a certain angle to get the correct amount of air to keep oil temps at the right temperature?

Put it in the best position possible for airflow, even duct it!

If it's over cooling, blank up a proportion of the cooler until you get the desired oil temperature

What sort oil temperature should it be running at?

Speak to opie oils, they'll recommend you an oil to fit the application and tell you what the safe working temperature is.

I've already asked him about what oils to use for first running the engine in then what to use afterwards.

Could anyone tell me on a sandwich plate, which is the outlet and inlet as you look at it when fitted? Making up my oil lines today.

doesn,t matter as the oil goes round from one union to the other with cooler in the middle.

I need it to going the correct way throught the filter first otherwise it would come the wrong way.
