First thing is gut it of all items that you dont need in the car.
I would then fit a decent suspension kit and gut the winder mechanism and fit polycarbonate windows.

As already said, I'd have a think before you start and decide whether you want 8v or 16v.
If you want 16v, I'd say it's far easy to just buy a VTS and get cracking. My ph2 was only £900, and you can pick up ph1's for around the £600 mark, both are significantly cheaper than converting your VTR.
Or, keep the VTR, and crack on losing weight and sorting the suspension.
You're far better spending money on tightening up the handling and upgrading the brakes / buying decent rubber though, MuZiZZle has a cammed VTS on here that made 141bhp on the rollers, and mine is standard. There's next to nothing in it until silly speeds on a straight road, but his is ridiculously good in the corners now, it makes mine feel like a milk float.
I'd be going for much firmer bushes, 266mm brakes, good track tyres, a nice suspension setup and some braces, then start looking to lose weight.

thanks i will probably have to have a rethink now as it does not sound like putting the 16v engine in is really worth doing at the mo.
