What are they???, ie multi mass, single piece and are they the same across the board so would a 1.1 have the same as a 1.6.

Basicully in wondering if you can lighten them..?

They are all just a cast iron lump. Clutch size vary depending on engine size and they swapped the mounting lugs about a little over the years as well. Yes you can lighten them but dont go to mad.

you can lighten them yes
or you can just buy a lightened/billet vts one fit that and an appropriate 200mm clutch to suit it

i have a helix on my vtr
your 1.3 will be the same fitment as all of them

There's a guy on Rallye reg with a lightened fly wheel off either a s1 or s2 that's been lightened but he wants £100 for it..

I've never had it done by at a guess you must be able to buy one off a scrapper and get it lightened for beer tokens at a local engineering shop..?

Edit: what weight loss is recommended then guys.?

in theory yes but keeping it balanced requires a little bit of skill as cast stuff is a bit shitty for consistancy

and if you get it wrong you will be lucky to walk away in one peace exploding flywheel - YouTube

I personally wouldn't buy one thats been DIY lightened unless I knew the company that done it were reputable

Can make them quite dangerous if not done right or too much taken off, make a mess of your whole car if it failed lol

As Alex sais, safer to buy one

Unless you know it's been done right

Edit- I wish I'd know you were gonna post that before I posted lol :p

So it wouldn't be advised to get a local company to whip me one up on a lave*..?

no i wouldnt lob one in a lathe and do it
im a machinist and i wouldnt think of doing one myself tbh

I'd of thought it would be fairly simple as they must be fairly well balanced in oem form so as long as they machined it evenly it should be ok no..?

That video is off putting I'll admit lol..

No mate stuff like casting/steel work can be denser at one end/areA

They will be balanced to an extent once they're made, small areas will be drilled out in diff places to get it in balance

If its not, or it's weakened too much, once it revs up it'll shake itself to pieces.. If its doIng 7k it's not going to end well lol

If you get them shaved or drilled down, your going to more then likely take them out of balance

That's why it's always lightened and balanced, it's also why proper turbo repairs are said to be so expensive when the repairs kits cost about £50

It needs to be balanced at the same time then...

I'll ask a few people locally i know in that case as I'll have it done if I can get one lightened for less than treble figures. I know there is a firm that do engine heads so I don't know if they can do this sort of thing..

If not the idea will be forgotten lol.
