Hi
Get this, I've just been quoted £480 to fit a new clutch on my VTR :/
I would do it myself if I had the time
But that price seems extortionate!
Anyone got a good idea of what it should really cost?
Surely not half a grand!

No more than 200 pound!
LUK clutch with 2 year warranty
Then told it would be a 5 hour fitting job!?

£400 pound for 5 hour labour? wtf should be around £150 for labour alone

Exactly my theory!
Part I understand is 80-100
Labour on top is no where near £400!

where is the place that quoted you? kwickfit or something like that? or a back street garage? just ask around, look in yellow pages and ring up some quotes.

Luk clutch will be around £50 to a garage halfords always over charge that sort of work, best bet is a clutch centre or small garage

i paid £300 for a valeo cutch to be fitted at a mrclutch, took them 2 hours max to do it very fast! was quoted about £260 for a cheaoper clutch but wanted the valeo one
i was stupid to pay that tbh ive had my gearbox off more times than i care to imagine but i was totally fed up with working on my car at the time, stupid thing is i had to take the gearbox off a week later to haev it repalced anyway!! grrr but yea £480 is a rip off!

I'm only looking at LUK or Valeo
But £480 is too much like you say!
So is £300 really :homme:
Should be £200 max (inc parts) on a Saxo its easy.

Rung around my local clutch people, no one will touch it for less than £350!
£250 is fair i spose, but its only a 45 min job off and maybe a hour back on they asking £100 odd a hour for labour.

well a decent oem clutch is £100 and then some oil on top so i paid around £180-190 in labour for 2 hours work is quite a lot but hey dont work by charging by the hours its jsut a one off price a bit like tracking, i paid £35 for tracking but it only took them 10min! lol

This is true!
I've been quoted £375 for a refurbished gearbox, LUK clutch and fitting
Sounds like I'll be going for that!
Also reminds me I need to sort tracking!

pm saxovtrmk1 on here, he is in hudds really good lad, did my clutch about 5 month ago for me, very reasonable price is all am saying :-)
How you know gearbox has been done?
Your getting qoutes for £350 just for clutch and they putting a new box in, they cost that alone if not more to be done.

I would have done, had the above offer not come through!

Gearbox specialists - guess I've just gotta hope it's been done!
If your getting a new box may aswell go for the 1.1 or VTS box...

Would prefer the VTS, as I don't fancy the high revs of motorway driving with a a 1.1 :P
S box ant much different mate.

he meant the s box isnt much different to the 1.1 box lol they are pretty much the same expect the vts box has a larger diff

Yeah, so if it means hard revving on motorways, I'd rather not :P

the final drive is different i think so it dosent rev so high in 5th, bascially the acceleration should be the same same except you have the bigger diff and it should rev so high in fifth for motorway driving, my mate has a vts box on his vtr and made a good difference

Thanks for the info
I might research the ratios of a 16v box, and when I get the gearbox done, request those instead :P

I've got an s box on mine, its not too bad although it is noticeably higher revving, i've thought I'm in fourth before when actually in fifth. Also first seems quite short. Just my experience.

I always thought that was how they went
Short 1st for quick acceleration but higher revving in motorway gears
