View Full Version : heat wrap!? bonnet lifters!?

just wondering what the benefits of heat wrap and bonnet lifters are?
just trying to reduce the engine bay temperature and wondering if these are worth doing and what other little bits i could do?
cheers!

Heat wrap keeps heat in the exhaust system, it's the increase in gas speed which is in theory better than just reducing temps externally.
Bonnet lifters IMO there's no point and they make the car look shit.

The standard vts heat exchanger is a good set up for most people.

Heat wrap keeps heat in the exhaust system, it's the increase in gas speed which is in theory better than just reducing temps externally.
This is the main reason but also if you're on track things tend to get quite hot as you're working it quite hard. The aftermarket manifolds, especially if stainless, don't keep the heat in very well. If the manifold runs fairly close to various things, alternator etc It's a good idea to try and get the temps down a bit.
Advantages of bonnet lifters are that you look super cool :homme:

I'd start with checking the condition of your rad, replace if required, then flushing out and replacing the coolant!!

Use proper heat wrap, not shite and cheap nasty stuff.

proper heat wrap you can touch a downpipe with the car running itll not feel too warm/hot
shit stuff and itll burn near enough the same as if you touched the bare pipe!!

The lava rock stuff from die is the best, bar none. Fucking expensive unfortunately but you get what you pay for.
Be thankful you didn't fund a turbo blanket from DEI Alex... Ouch.

ive seen a few crack but mine have all been fine so i keep wrapping lol
ive wrapped my entire exhaust right to the backbox previously to try and aid gas flow
tempted too on my new setup too

Aha
Is this just down to water/moisture seeping in?
Sorry for harping on and on lol. Trying to find the right answer. So a hit and miss thing? no point in bothering on a daily though is there?

I've never seen any crack, but that could be luck. Go ceramic coated (or zircotec) if youre concerned.
Oddly Alex, I've just started wrapping my full exhaust this weekend. Always had the down pipe and screamer done, but been meaning to get round to the full system. Better exit temps, less noise, less resonance, and for the miles my car does, no drawbacks (wouldn't do it on a daily mind you).

I used that thermotec wrap on the link alex posted.
Make sure you do a good job of the wrapping as well, I overlapped mine quite a bit as I wasn't bothered about wrapping past the bottom of the manifold. Use the spray they recommend as well to help improve the life of the wrap. Stops moisture soaking in and the wrap fraying.
I only wrapped mine down this far you see as I didn't want it getting ruined any lower from scraping or stuff as it's a daily.

Good job there Ryan - did you put it on wet?
cheers dude.
Yeah, I used a spray bottle to soak it bit by bit as i put it on.
I did one branch down to the join then did it's neighbour and went over the top of the join and continued wrapping down the thicker branch and finished it off. then did the same on the other 2. If that makes sense...
This photo shows the first one I did. Then I went and did the very right hand one which joined the already wrapped one... I wrapped over the already wrapped one and then continued down the thicker pipe to where I stopped.

This meant I didn't need to use as much and reduced the number of starting points that could fray. So the 2 joins halfway down are hidden under the wrap of the final branches. I think this is the best way to do it really. And as has been said before... use gloves! and be patient. Pulling it nice and tight while it's wet means it should be super tight once dry.
Then I sprayed it as mentioned before:

yep that's pretty much how i did mine (using the same DEI stuff too obviously). Only difference is I drowned mine first (soaked in bucket of water). But it doesn't move a fraction now so I'm well happy.
Damn right about gloves - the first manifold I ever wrapped about 10 years ago I didnt. and tried to do it dry. Had itching, painful hands for several days. Was fucking agony. FML.
