Posting this here as I doubt the VW lads look in the technical bits.

Hi guys!

Coming home from Trax today my Golf started tapping. I checked for play in the wheels and realised the tapping is actually coming from my handbrake.

Now, the handbrake clicked about 20 times beforehand. Now, it only clicks about 8. On top of that, I can actually feel the tapping through the handbrake lever.

HERE (http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g439/L1QuiD/0F5C9944-320E-41CE-8E22-17F6DC5C69C6-414-00000018DBFFEE39.mp4) is a link to a video I did. The faster I go, the quicker it taps.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

If a mod wants this moved, I understand completely! And before someone suggests it, I've already posted it on the VW forum but they're slow lol

No help, but it just means you're going to have to hurry up fitting that bench ;)

Something stuck on your rear disc? Fucked pad?

The knock is definitely coming from the handbreak lever area. Also, this isnt somethi g that has been gradually getting worse. Its just appeared from nowhere. Haven't been under it as to be honest, it's to low to get under.

As of Monday I'm off for 12 days so I'll have a look then. It's possible that the new handbrake and bench seat may be in sooner than even I thought!

It's not been given a tap by the exhaust has it??

Quite possibly. The underneath took a huge hit yesterday at Silverstone.

Your cables and exhaust run very close to each other so it might just be vibrating on the cable or your front exhaust mount caught on it or something??

This is what I thought to be honest. Couldn't think why the knocking would get quicker or slower with the speed though. Hopefully it has just snagged on something.

My old one did this and I've completly forgotten what caused it.

Sorry I'm useless, I'll do my best to remember!

This has been pin pointed to the rear left wheel. I'm wondering if a lip has formed on the rear shoe which could be catching the drum?

As is usually the case, the horrendous noise turned out to be something simple.

Turns out that i've managed to scrape away my handbrake cable mount. This allowed the handbrake cable to rub against the wheel itself. Simply job of cable tying the handbrake cable sleeve back in place.

Seems to be sorted now!
