Hey guys, right I've got some serious car problems now I've narrowed it down to an airleak on the Inlet manifold.... There are no garages avaliable near when I live so I have to deal with this myself..... ive got no idea what the manifold is or what it does or how to find it.... This is where you guys come in.... I've got a 99 westcoast 1.4.... I need to discover where the manifold is and where the air leak is and how to repair it....... Some posts said spraying wd40 somewhere just after starting the car..... Now the air/fuel ratio is utterly screwed as its overfuelling quite dangerously..... it stalls randomly and idles at 1100rpm and a little throttle causes stalling and aggrivating grunting and it is a pain in the ass!! Need your help guys in identifying manifold leaks and such ... Pics would be a great help... Many thanks and im even willing to PayPal over a few quid should I successfully do this! Cheers Callum....

Inlet manifold is to the top of the engine (in pic above My old vtr engine)
Check all hoses and conections to it first!
Then remove air filter and check the throttle body - it may need a clean!

Hoses?
Sorry im an IT nerd, ive got barely any knowledge on cars, which makes it a nightmare that their arnt any garages around, throttle body is where the air is taken in from the K&N thats on it? (Butterfly thing)? Seems like there is like an oil residue inside the cirlcle bit when i run my finger around it? How do i clean?
And the hoses? How do i check/what do i check?
Again sorry pal, im not very educated when it comes to cars.....
Cheers

Hoses - look at all the pipes on the throttle body/manifold - check that they are properly attached and in good condition!
Your filter looks like it could do with a clean!
I'd guess by the fact that yours (throttle body) has writing all over it, that its been replaced in the past!

Hi Callum!
How did you manage to narrow it down to an Air leak in the inlet manifold? - What techniques did you use?
The inlet manifold is connected to the K&N filter and is the entire lot until you get to the head of the engine. Can be a bit of a faff if you dont have the patience or the right tools though (even though you do only really need a flat head screwdriver and a socket set).
Has your Engine Management light come on at all? And does it flash up when you first start the car, IE turn the ignition on?
Also, Your K&N air filter is in a pretty bad place where it is. Might be quite beneficial for you to get a standard air box back on there, or an enclosed induction kit as it will be taking a lot of hot air into the engine, which wont do it any good.

Writing is the dates Timing Belt/Servicing was done, which can now be updated as it had a full service 3Weeks ago, cleaned the airfilter yesterday, breather filter was brand new yesterday (£12)

Cheers for the reply dude, ermm basically narrowed it down through extensive google'ing and this website, no EML is showing up, yes flashes up as normal with all the other dash lights... and your the first person to mention the placement of the airfilter, it came with the car like this.... not to sure about putting the airbox back on as it did the same thing and ive just had to cut off all the breather plug to put the filter on it (another piece of advice)....

Rightttttt!
Could this be my problem?
The location of my air filter?
Hot air entering the engine? Hot air less oxygen, so in theory its starving the engine of air causing the ratio of the 2 to screw up, BUT! it grunts and stuff from cold/ not running for a while, so it cant be this? :/ really dont know guys!

It COULD cause it to bog down and not run as well when there is heat in the engine, but this wouldn't actually cause an issue from cold - It will just be another contributing factor really lol
As you say there are not EML lights on, I would say it will be something to do with the inlet manifold. Whether its a sensor or an air leak I couldn't say ATM.. are you able to hear any air leaks at all?
