Fitting the belt is fine, as per internet guides and haynes, all points on the belt tie up with the cam sprockets and crank pulley fine. Tighten everything up, spin it over by hand and its about 2 teeth out? Done this about 3 times now.
Any tips?

put it 2 teeth out then when you tention it up it will come round and be on time

if the bottom ends locked properly and the cam(s) has/have been locked when you tensioned the belt then theres no reason it should be out after turning over.

this is an 8v?
are you just changing the belt or is this a new engine build using parts from more than 1 engine
If so i suggest you count the number of teeth on crank + cam pullies
and crank should have half as many as cam pulley .
there were some 8v engines that had different no. of teeth than other models ,so a mix and match of timing belt pullies could cause this problem
other than that --there is no way it could move out of alignment if you did it correctly to start with and you have a good key in the crank pulley to locate it correctly

The engine is 16v, further playing today shows that every 2 revolutions of the engine the teeth go back by 2.
Background info, bought the car as a non runner, it had a second hand cylinder head fitted and was sold with a timing issue, looking at the sprockets it looks like the exhaust side of things has been fucked about with (different bolt holding sprocket on)
How many teeth are the sprockets meant to have, the same for inlet and exhaust?
Can't beleieve I had 2 sets of cylinder head spares that went to the scrap man not long ago :'(

Ive just counted 38 teeth on my cam sprockets, but 40 on a picture of some on the internet. Surely this is my problem? PSA fitted 2 different cam sprockets on their 16v engines? And I need 2 40 toothed sprockets?

38 teeth is standard. I've never seen 40?

Oops just re-looked at the pictures, those sprockets were for a Suzuki gti

Just done that and it appears to be 19 teeth so in theory everything should work :panic: Given up for the day now, will count everything again tomorrow and then try again.

Are you trying to time it up by the marks on the belt or by the timing marks on the pulleys and locking the crank off?

I lock the cam sprockets and crank in place using the supplied holes and then loosen the bolts on the sprockets. Put the belt on and match the marks/lines on it to the marks on the sprockets and crank, adjust the tensioner, tighten bolts on crank sprockets, rotate engine....and then the marks on the belt go out of place.

Thats normal. As long as the locking point still line up after rotation its done right!

Long as the engine doesn't lock when turning by hand it should be fine
Shouldn't really rely on the marks on the belt as they may not be correct

The marks on the belt are for initial timing, they wont align every two turns, as long as it don't, lock is ok.

Wait so the belt marks dont have to align? And its fine there going 2 teeth back every 2 engine revolutions?!

Yes. As said they are for making sure the belt is on the correct tooth on first fitment.
Think about it, how will the marks line up after rotation when the bottom pulley is half the size of the cams lol. If you keep turning it they will like up eventually but will soon go off again.
As i said, just make sure the locking points still line up after a couple of turns ;)
