Got a new universal open air filter that fits directly onto the throttle body... Only cost £7.99. Are these open ones bad for the engine as I've read they get all the heat from the engine. Mite try it for a few days... Just want to know is there more down side to them than good points?
Also does it give the engine a diffrent sound? Not sure if I want that or not.. Thanks

it'l reduce power from heatsoak caused by the engine, and will use up a fair bit more fuel, but will give the engine a deeper tone

Save your money :)

If you have a 1.1 as it says on your profile i would save your money. The air filter will change the noise but will soak up alot of heat. To reduce the heat soak the air filter needs to be enclosed. Not worth it IMO.

would it not recude heat soak if you had a pipe coming from the grill to almost touching the cone? thats what i have at the moment as a temporary job until i can afford a enclosed kit :)

I thought you were using the standard air filter again??

i was :) but the engine felt too restricted on the lower revs with it and decided if i could reduce heat soak it would be better, so i have been experimenting with different ideas, this one seems to be best so far lol, but tbf was cold out tonight so i assume heat soak would have been hard to get haha
also i did miss the noise of the cone when i give it a bit through town :')

You've switched filters around, you made a thread about how sluggish your car is against a 1.4. I think its more then a daft cone filter. Get it on a machine and checked.
Some dude in your thread mentioned Compression test aswell.

had it on a fault code reader, it came up with nothing, dont think it would be down on compression as it occasionally goes as it should do lol, seems like its just a small problem with a big consiquence :n:

Bet it keeps up with vts's now....
Its can be down on compression and run fine btw.

hahah how did u guess ;)
but if compression was the problem i'd have thought it would be a constant problem not intermittant?
maybe im wrong i dont know, will probably get a compression test done when i can get hold of a guage for an hour or so soon :)

Because all vtr owners claim they keep up vts's lol...

lol, tbh, i wouldnt even bother tryin to keep up with a vts :P
and dont wanna try to fool myself into thinking a backbox & cone filter is gunna add 30bhp, probably doesnt even add 3 bhp hahah

Was gonna leave the original cold feed pipe there anyway. Not really bothered on how quick my saxo is, it only a 1.1 and its quick enough for me ;) since the filter was cheap thought I'd give it ago

You can call a 1.1 slow but it'll do 90+ on motorway/A road... Why would you need to go any faster unless of a real emergency lol

yeah i know what u mean, tbh, i hardly ever go over 80, its just the acceleration i like to have :) but i do agree with you, wouldnt need to go faster, surley a 1.0 is adequate, cant go over 70 on uk roads ;)

Does my oil breather pipe need a filter? Or can it just point near the filter over a catch tank?

Plumb it to a catch tank or connected into the inlet tract after the filter (as standard)

pfft the UNIVERSAL air filter wont fit, the big rubber washer is so thick that it wont go fully on the inlet and the icv sensor stops it pusing fully on and when you tighten the jubilee because the washer isnt fully on it just squeeses the washer and the whole thing pops off lol

invest in some pipe and mount it infront of the rad, less heatsoak then too :y: but is it worth it if its only a universal filter
