View Full Version : How Reliable are 16v conversions on vtr's

I'm just wondering how reilable i.e changing looms etc from a standard vtr with an S conversion?
Some bloke I knew had a ph2 vtr with a vts lump in it and it was an absolute dog, this is my daily driver so need it to start up every morning and work as it should.
I've had 16v's in the past but they've all been from ph1's, never had to mess around doing the conversion myself and with my car being a ph2 I dont want to have to fart around splicing looms etc.
If anyone can provide any advice as to what I need for the conversion that would be great, I've got a 52 plate vtr at the moment and know of a 30,000 mile 16v lump available but is ph1 not ph2.
Any help appreciated.

it will work perfectly if its done properly. it all swaps directly.
going from a 3 plug to a single plug loom will be a ball ache though

if you change the engine and corresponding ecu and wiring, there's no difference to the reliability than the original car would have had. The engine wouldn't know it's in a different car, and runs from the ECU that's installed, so would "think" it's in the original car.
So it should be 100% reliable. Any that stop being reliable after a transplant have been bodged.

im getting a loom spliced soon, hooe to god i have no issues but ph2 vts engines are rocking horse shit to find.
the other option is swapping the sensors to mk2 on the mk1 engine, but i dont know which ones are different. can anyone shed light on that?

swap the sensors and put a jp4 in. Just sort the inlet and you're laughing. JP4's are 2 a penny.

J4 has a better bottom end though than the jp4 ive been told by a few tuners now
maybe j4 bottom end with jp4 head?

Its a ph1 engine that I've got the chance of getting, however as I understand it some ph2 vts's came with the ph1 engine I.e minus the EGR valve. I've noticed one W reg ph2 with that engine in

is it a different sensor though or does the loom not reach?
im getting a mk2 loom and a mk1 engine tommorrow, i may just try and plug all the wires in and see what doesn't fit? would that work?

The only reason a conversion would run bad after a loom splice is if it hasnt been spliced properlly i would imagine :y: Ive done loads and never had a problem.

I guess conversions get a bad rep when people do them on a very limited budget and just shove a cheap engine in without renewing or rebuilding anything added to the fact of using dodgy looms and wiring bodges.

maybe j4 bottom end with jp4 head?
that's quite a sweeping statement, and rather a daft one given the block and crank are nigh on identical.
unless they actually mean the rods and pistons? pistons I could see, but the rods are the same ones used in the C2R2's at 180 bhp, on single throttle body.

Who are the few tuners who've told you this please? And can you/they define "bottom end"? As said - they are essentially the same as a J4. I have run over 400hp on a JP4 "bottom end" (forged rods/pistons of course). The block and crank are bomb proof.

My conversion has been fine for 15k+ miles now and my loom was spliced by my old man 3 plug to single.
