Just been cammed

well lads, just got my car back running after being cammed and lightened flywheel and full exhaust system, im kind of disappointed as it doesnt feel any quicker, if anything it just seems slower down low in the revs :( I have 743's and they are just set on the exact standard timing marks, the car actually idles fairly ok and revs very rapid in neutral but just doesnt seem to pull very good... will be getting a map soon but will the map really make that much of a difference to how it is now??

yes.

you changed the cams, but kept standard timing, gains will be minimal until the engine is timed correctly for the new cams.

Theres really no point in running this cam without a remap. It needs more fuel.

standard timing is generally fine for these cams unless running a better inlet manifold.

Yes!

The power is in the fuel and the ability to burn it.

So now you just put more air, but not the right amount of fuel.

That's why you have poor performance, you are running lean.

ah thats a relief then :) this is the first time ive cammed an engine and i was just a bit worried i was after wasting a load of money for no gains :zainy: i just thought the map was really to sort out idling and that! so i should get a good improvment after the map then?

Also is there anything else i should do or get before the map? such as bigger injectors or a higher FPR or anything? or is it ok as it is? i just want to make sure i have everything it needs before the map.. the full spec is the cams, toyosport 421, supersprint centre and kam backbox, ecosse enclosed induction kit and the L/B flywheel!

All you need is a remap. Bigger injectors etc aren't needed.

Not true I'm afraid. The cams leave the factory setup for optimum performance on standard timing settings. There may be a small improvement by playing with the timing after fitting, but generally you'll be 90% of the way there on the standard marks.

Getting a remap is where you'll see the difference - as others have said, you've enhanced the engines ability to breath now, but we need to give it more fuel too to make a bigger bang :)

You wont see much more peak power after the map but it makes a huge difference to how it drives, also peak power on mine was around 7200rpm and dosent drop off until 7500rpm so before the map your not really seeing it. Mine was set to the recommended timing and when we played about with it it lost around 3hp on standard marks.

ah thats all good then, i never cammed any of my cars before and was expecting too much from just the cams, but ill get her mapped now as soon i can and hopefully ill feel it wasnt all for nothing then!! ;)

Its not a huge difference over standard anyway really its a pretty mild engine modification.

I had a vts with newman ph3 cams and mapped of chipwizards, i now have one with 743 and mapped of automarc... My old vts with ph3 would wipe the floor my current one. I dont think 743 are all there cracked up to be

I get around 390 miles out of a tank motorway driving. Press the loud pedal to much though and it is a noticeable difference.
