A gearstick which is sloppy (as Alan Hansen would say) when in gear - say 3rd gear is selected - but theres play side to side; is it typically the worn roll pin that causes that, or knackered gear linkages?

Cheers :)

The 2 shorter linkages, you're as well replacing all three.

It could also be wear on the nylon ball on the bell crank, load it with grease will help.

roll pin wear is front to back movement i.e actual gear selection.

For best results I'd change it all mate won't be overly expensive and will feel nice and tight :)

personally I found the nylon ball doesnt make too much difference, providing its not utterly shagged. The roll pin movement was the biggest cause of play on mine, and the in-out movement of the selector shaft

Did you manage to change your roll pin in-situ? Ive changed the pin before, but only as a matter of course on fitting new boxes out of the car.

I've changed the roll pin in situ on 2 cars now. Bit of a pain but can be done :)

Yeah dead easy, took me 10 minutes. Use that method up on here someone did - wheel off and two 1/2 extensions connected and a torx fitting on the end to butt up against the pin and push it out. You should be able to get it through the gap where the TCA comes through, few taps and its out
