Hello,
My saxo went "pop" today on the way to work. I had a pretty bad oil leak and smoked out the bad on high revs. I opened the bonnet but theres no signs of visable damage to the engine. Wasnt sure if someone blew a whole through it.
Any ideas what might have broke and whats the best move now? Engine rebuild or replacement engine?
Cheers

i dont think i would bother rebuilding it regardless.
Did it smoke before it went bang, or was there a bang, and then it now runs smokey?

It smoked before it went bang. but only over about 4000rpm.

Sounds like piston/piston ring failure, easier to get a new engine tbh

Check ebay.
May even be worth getting a C2 VTS engine put in.
Lower miles overall, just needs a few tweeks to get it working.

How can you check an engine is ok while its out a car?

I would take it too a garage.
Tbh it doesnt sound like you'd know if it was sat in front of you.
No offence, as i'd be exactly the same...

How do you know its gone bang? ie: what are the symptoms and does it even start anymore?

It actually went "pop" then there was a noticable loss in power and heavy vibration from the engine.
It does still run, not tried to start it since it went pop though. It feels like its running on 2 cylinders.

sounds like needs pulling apart really to identify the cause, if it was smoking etc

I wouldn't write the engine off, could be a number or reasonably simply fixes.

Might just be the head gasket has blown, where was it leaking oil from?

Ok managed to drive it home gently and start to have a look at it.
It looks like its blown the coil/spark plugs in the #2 and #4 (from the left) cylinders. the #2 coil is actually blown to pieces and the spark plug has actually broken at the top.

My 1.4 detonated on the dual carriage way didn't know what had happened at first but pulled over and looked up the rad to see a trail of oil. Opened the bonnet and it was obvious that the conrod had snapped.
It had snapped the rod in three
Came through the front and back of the block
Smashed the skirt off the piston
Smashed the oil pump clean off
Sheered all the teeth off the oil pump pulley
Snapped the chain
Smashed the water pump out of the block
And destroyed the liner
All what was holding that side of the block together was the head and sump
All in all it still ran, just very lumpy haha. All I changed was the bottom end and its still fine 8 months down the line.
Moral of the story is you don't just have to go and get a complete engine.

I plan to give it a go if it is something thats fixable.
£80 for a new coil! bloody hell!
Anyone near Glasgow i could borrow their coil to see if it works when i plug it in?

So was looking at Euro car parts for the coil. Whats the difference between the 3?
Mine is a W-Reg, 2000 mark 2.
