Hello, looking forward to do an oil/filter change on my VTS and i came across this 10w 40 Castrol GTX which is really cheap,i can get 4l for 12£,it is worth to save some money and put this in? usage is normal,no trackdays planned.
Many thanks.

Yeah its decent enough, these engines were designed for semi synthetic 10w40 anyway so even on track it should be OK

if the grades stay the same, surely there isnt all that much difference with the oil you put in?

Vast difference in oil quality from make to make even with the same grade. Vast.

I'd like to see some tests of the really cheap stuff such as tescos/asdas/wilko oil compared to your more pricey but run of the mill brands. Probably have to be over a long period though

is it down to a smoother acceleration and the oil maintaining that quality of lubrication for long which dictates how "good" an oil is? i just put gulf 5w-40 and
that stuff is god send compared to th old oil i had. tbf, the old oil was getting dark in colour but was still oily by touch so i assumed the lubrication was still up to scratch.

I think the quality of oil is due to its breakdown capabilities when heat and time are taken into account.

Or take all the guesswork out and use an oil of the correct weight (i.e. 10w40) that meets ACEA A3/B4.

Everyone has their preferred brand, if you stick to one of the big ones in the correct grade you'll be fine. I can't see any difference in the gtx I used and the fully synth 5w40 I took out, just I wanted the specified grade

My xsi seems to burn use the gtx alot quicker than it uses magnetec.

I use gtx 10/40 in my supercharged saxo. Its changed along with the filter after every track outing.

burn as in use up, I change oil every 5k anyway, just noticed I topped up a couple times with the gtx, where as on the magnetec was a lot less used, I have a couple of leaks and valve stem seals aren't great,
although on my diesel that barely burnt a drop on gtx after nearly 10k at 150k total mileage

You won't go wrong with gtx, it's cheap enough to do 2 oil changes for the price of one of the pricey stuff
