Removing the thermostat

Im using my car purely for fun on the track and had a friend advise 'got take thermostat out for that mate runs better'
What do we think?

When you say your using it for track days everyone seems to have an opinion and its difficult to no what to do, his theory seemed good but the last thing i want to do is bugger the engine when im throwing it around a track

He said that by removing it it would allow the cooled water to circulate all the time and when the engine is being push like on a track its less likely to over heat

and too cold can be just as bad as too hot
run a cooler thermostat --but do not remove it totally
the engine designer has worked out the flow rates around the block +allowed for flow in the heater pipes etc ,thats why you will see h/gaskets have different size holes in the water passages to make the water flow equally --
you would also need to adjust the mapping to compensate for the change inwater temps ,it could be that at low power output the water temp could drop so much that the ecu thinks it is ib warm up ,so enrichs the fuelling
possibly causing bore wash
if itruns too cool the pistons will not expand ,so could be too loose in bores cuasing excess wear in bores

change things too far at your own peril

Put it this way... Running without a stat will crack the head... The water passes through the head too fast and doesnt fill the cross chanels and is too fast to remove the heat from it, it gets stonking hot and crack....

fit a lower temp stat instead like an 89 degree one as opposed to the standard 92 degree (iirc)

Iirc gti6 runs a cooler thermostat

you can get thermostats down to 72 or 74 c if you hunt the applicaton books for a big power boosted car .
but if its a n/a and reasonably std then an 82c is as low as you need to g
