View Full Version : Exhaust DIY expert help needed!

Evening!
Drove to sainsburys earlier (exciting I know), and parked up, happy as always.
Walked back to the sax and though 'hmm... Exhaust looks a little low', well seems I was spot on. Bracket snapped.
It appears that it's not the exhaust bracket, rather the piece of metal on the car that holds it up!
I've attached some pics here. As you'll see, the piece of the car it fell from is pretty damn rusty. I need a fix and don't know any welders! Pics show my amazing fix to get me back from my 4 mile trip!
Any thoughts?

Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks all!

bad fix :P I had the same problem.
I got a large exhaust clamp, cut it into a "J" shape, drilled a hole in the boot floor, with a large washer and nut on each side made a permanent bolt on exhaust mount :y:

No?
You haven't read my post properly.
I've simply replaced the hook which fell off, with a cut U clamp. the rubber goes onto it and the exhaust hangs as "normal".
And it's variable height :y:

Ah... I too fully understand now!
Deffo think I'll give this a bash.
Not gunna bother with weld due to the sheer rustiness up there. Easier and probably safer to bolt it through to the boot!
Won't get it done for a few days (using the other halfs car) but will post results on here when it's done! :y:

But when you hit a bump and you exhaust moves, surely the 'homemade' bracket bounces and rattles

It seems I need to provide you with a picture of what I've done or:
I'll explain it differently, one last time.
An exhaust clamp is a U shaped bolt with a thread on it. cut it so it is J shaped.
You drill a hole in the boot floor near where the original hangar was on the body.
You put a nut and a large flat washer on the J bolt. You put it into the hole yo've just drilled.
You put a large washer and nut on the other side from inside the boot.
This gives you a solid mounting point for the rubber to hang from.

Here is a diagram

If you want, you can use the whole U clamp, but the downside is you can't get the exhaust rubber off easily. but it is more stable.
The nuts need to be tight, otherwise it'll bend. Use a clamp with at least an M8 thread on it.

Thanks for this, great help.
I'll have a think of best way to do it and post back results!
Cheers again for the help! :y:

Welding is clearly the best choice, but welding rust is hard :P
That's why I bolted mine! it's been a success for 8 months so far.

You really have to worry about some things on this forum, grind the rust back to clean metal. And it'll only need a few spot welds. You could even buy a £40 arc welder and do it yourself.

Why are you getting so irate?
I appreciate your opinion, but it is useful to also get other people's opinion chap.

ha ha imagine if you came to me and said can you fix this. Came back and found out I had dried holes in your car and bolted it to the boot floor. "sorry mate I had to drill it because you cant weld rust." like that would ever happen.

Are you for real?
Lets see you can bodge the fuck out of one of 3 hangers holding your exhaust to the car or you can weld it do it right and never have to worry about it again? bit of a no brainer but yeah if you want to fuck about with a bit of exhaust clamp and a hole in your boot floor then yeah jog on mate.

Ok, but really it's my choice what I do with my car I simply appreciate other people's input and help.
Varied opinions make a thread what it's meant to be, but reiterating your opinion in a somewhat aggressive manor isn't going to make me do what you say.
If I decide to weld, I'll weld and post. If I don't, I'll bolt and post.
If it's not what you want to read, then perhaps you'd be better off not looking at the thread!

Being that the rust is that bad, probally easier to scrap the car, no doubt its rusted else where, its thorughly fucked mate, bodging it is doing nothing, just prolonging the i end

LOL I'm dying, too many Saxos are bodged, this one amazes me further as its a simple fix to put back the way it was designed to be

If the hangers are rusty enough to snap off chances are the boot floor is utterly shagged. If it were me I'd strip the read and go rust hunting to get an idea of how bad it is, otherwise MOT man will

Locked before it escalates, i think op has enough opinions on what he should do.
I would get it welded my self but completely up to you. I must admit i have bodged exhausts on previous 'run abouts' though.
Which ever way you decide to do it just make sure its very secure, i don't want to be driving behind you on the motorway with bits of metal coming off your car.
