View Full Version : Running temps - problem?

So I had a run down a motorway for a short sustained stretch (about 30 minutes) tonight and found that my temperature gauge crept up past 3/4. Still way off the top of the gauge but higher than normal. The car will have had plenty of airflow because it's quite a cool night so I'm a bit puzzled. Do VTR's normally run that warm?

Might be worth bleeding the system to see if there's any air in there?

Yeah that was my first thought. I'm doing a coolant change before winter anyway so I'll check it then. Yours run warm Mick?

Mines fine, when I drove it from stoke it was about 3 hours and no problems (apart from the front wheels not balanced, so it was 60 all the way) goes up in traffic but when the fan kicks in its ok.
I'd change and bleed the system, if your still having bother you might have a dodgy thermostat.

Unless it's overheating, I'd leave it.
it's under increased load, a dirty radiator could be causing that. or even a dying sensor.
bleeding it first would be a good idea though.

Id try bleeding it first, its free to try, if its still there - try a new sensor, if its still there - try new thermostat - can maby even bung in a (gti-6?) opens at 83° instead of 89° or something alike, will help keep temp down

Cool. It's getting changed anyway, I wouldn't think that it's been done since new so we'll see. Cheers chaps.

new stat, water pump and radiator renewal/cleaning is what i'd do. But a stat and radiator are the easy ones to do.
I run an 82 in mine, as said opens earlier. What oil do you run too, ie: is it thick enough?

In the drive back from collecting my vts
A couple of weeks ago I noticed the temp gauge
Going up to over 3/4 , it's a 30 mile drive back
. Done a bleed the next morning and topped her up
And it's been fine since .
