Hi guys just about at the stage now where fresh oil will be going into my rebuilt engine.
My question is what type of oil and grade would I need to use to run the engine in for the first 1000 miles and then after the oil change what would I need to use in the engine then on?

Iirc I'm sure I was told to run the engine in on a cheap oil? If so why is this?
Thanks

I've always been told 5w40 or 10w40 oil. 5w40 will be thinner so better for a newer engine. I've never personally heard of using cheap oil on the run if the engine but someone else might know more about that

To me logic seems to dictate that as you've spent out on a rebuild then it's wise to use a decent oil.castrol 10w 40 is a good one with maybe a fram oil filter.:drink:

i use millers runing in oil on my engine builds

the idea to use cheap oil is to let the new parts bed in

if the oil is to good it will protect the parts to well

What about on cold starting?that's when most engine wear happens isn't it?:y::drink:

Thanks mate Ye I was 100 percent someone told me to use the cheap oil on running the engine in.
Thanks for explaining that mate. :)

Just rebuilt mine. Ill be running cheap TripleQX 5w40 fully synthetic oil. £10 for 5 litres. Changing at 1,000 miles, 3,000 miles and 6,000 miles. Then standard service periods after that.

Its depends what you mean by 'rebuild'

On my Mr2 Turbo, the engine a 3SGTE. I have semi rebuilt with new pistion rings & I have to run strictly non synthetic oil for 500 miles to bed the rings in.

Forged Pistons and rods, piston rings big end bearings etc
Still using stock crankshaft

you dont want to use fully synthetic oil 1st just use a normal mineral oil

then swap after 500miles

I would suggest what I'm doing to be honest bud.

I've always thought you needed a mineral oil of the correct spec to run in with then when that's done switch to whatever is normal for that particular engine

CRO 10W40 is an oil designed to specifically to aid the running in process of rebuilt engines by providing full protection of highly stressed components whilst allowing optimum bedding in process for piston rings to the cylinder bore. It is not recommended that synthetic or semi synthetic oils are used for bedding in as they can be too slippery.
Suitable for test bed running up to 5 hours or for 500 miles on the road CRO 10W40 also allows for short burst runs at full engine load.
It is recommended that once the running in process is complete, the oil system is flushed and the oil replaced with the correct grade specified for the engine.
Available in 5 Litre size
