I currently use shell 10w40, my car is high mileage (170,000) so if I was to use 5w40 would this be too thin? 5w40 is the actual recommendation for my car but since I've owned the car been advised to use 10w40 because it's high mileage or what ever.

Also what do people think to shell oil? Would u recommend any other brand over that?

Can use either really, doesn't make to much difference, however iirc most people run the 5w40 on lower millage engines. For me I used 5w40 but mine was only on 55k. With yours being a very high millage I'd personally stick to what it has always had and a slightly thicker oil so 10w40.

Shell oil is good, castrol is supposed to be one of the better brands.

I'd use a good quality semi synth 10w40 in any saxo engine, unless it was used very hard on track. Any decent brand will be fine, it'll make no difference on a road car

If your engine has any oil leaks changing to 5w 40 the engine will leak more oil.

If you run an engine on one brand +=grade for a long time it would be foolish to change ,as all oils have different addatives and changing it could cause you to start using oil -
-more to the point

Sorry to hop in here, but are cheap oils i.e asdas own any worse than the shell or castrol equivelent? Would you stay clear?

Personly i would steer clear of supermarket oil and remanufactured oil.
For the extra £5 or £10 by a respected brand.

for normal use they will be fine --but for performance car --keep away
