Hi

I have an 02 plate vts and at the front of the engine just above the ex manifold there is a round black item with a diaphragm under the cover. It has a silver metal pipe running to it fron the right hand side of the head. The other pipe goes to another large mystery item behind the passenger fog light???!

Any ideas?

Thank you

sounds like bits of the air pump pipework for the emissions regs on the later 16vs? Remove it if you want

Correct ^

It's the EGR valve:

Superb, thanks

Will it do any harm if I remove all this? Presumably it's the air pump behind the foglight and it's right where I want my sump guard bracket to to go.

What about the connections onto the head?

Cheers

RIP it all out. No problem.

Iirc the hole in the head can be filled with a penny and some chemical metal :)

Everyone loves a smartarse...

No it's not an EGR. It's technically a fresh air pump. Most refer to it as the EGR. Everyone knows what everyone else means.

if its not an erg, whats the purpose of it?

That's great thanks. Do you know what the purpose of it actually is? It's coming out anyway but why the air pump? Emissions control I'm guessing...

Yes - emissions control and cat temperature improvements on cold start.

It pumps warmed air from above the manifold into the cylinder head I believe. It's obviously there to get the car through more stringent emissions control regulations but it's not really going to make any difference, earlier 16vs didn't have it fitted
