engine management light - diagnostic software?

I have had problems with the engine management light coming on and the car sometimes stuttering. Any ideas where I can buy the software / leads for this? Also are there any tutorials about as I have no idea how to diagnose such faults.

I have autocom cdp which gives full diag capabilities but if you don't want to spend much money you are better off going to a trusted/recommended garage
