Thinking about doing the conversion. Anyone know if the box will last. Im going to be doing road rallys and will be a lot of stop starts so need the bottom end gain
But scared with it being a smaller diff. Anyone know if it will hold up??

I had a 1.1 box fitted to my saxo which was running 150bhp and it held up fine for almost a year I had it and as far as I know is still going with its present owner, and i did alot of hard take offs but from past experience I learned not to dog it too hard with wheel spinning on purpose and the like, thats what really kills the diffs in them :)

all MA gearboxes are the same strength.
all MA differentials are the same "size" apart from a tiny difference in the sport boxes.
What makes them appear weaker, is the torque multiplication due to being shorter ratio.
So as long as you're not banging the clutch from a standing start like a maniac it should be fine :P

Is there any way of checking for whines or defects while box is not fitted?

Nothing really apart from the manual checks you can do such as make sure the bearing fork is free, no play in the input shaft etc

Don't all PSA gearboxes whine like fuck anyway? :p

They all whine a little bit. It'll be more noticeable with no interior in the car!

I did this to all my MA gearbox's . Sooner or later it will slip . So i joined it the permanent way . Better do it before install the gearbox on the car .

Isnt that dangerous on a fwd car?

not in this case, just welding the crown wheel to the diff to stop it slipping. I believe its pressed on usually or bonded on (at least in the rover application of this box to my knowledge). I'm pretty sure the Quaife limited slip diffs for these boxes are machined in such a way that it eliminates this issue

Can anyone tell me how to do this weld job?

Can anyone tell me how to do this weld job?
Step 1: Remove diff
Step 2: Apply weld
Step 3: ????
Step 4: PROFIT!

I've seen this a few times now, and my quaife was pinned to the CW before I converted to BE. However, before that, I never spun the crown wheel off the diff, but stripped the teeth off the planet gears numerous times!

you should asking yourself the question at this point if you should not be fitting an lsd with a different ratio for what you are doing -tarmac rally car you don,t need a top speed of much over 100 mph --so any std cit /pug gear ratio set +dif combo will not be the best solution
and yes wheelsspinnig any std type pug/cit dif will damage planet gears quickly --thats what all the grey colour is in the oil and th bits on the dump plug when you drain it--cast iron dif casing wearing away which then allows planets to move out till they do not have full tooth contact --then they shatter
