Hello
I am really struggling with my car, im not a Car person, so please go easy on me haha. Basically, i am i university and i needed a Car to get to Uni and stuff. It is an old car i got for Cheap, registration number is W577 WKK, its an old Citroen 3 door 1.4 2001 model i think, im not sure, but thats the Registration number.

So, after a few months of driving this thing, the electrics start to fail, power steering goes, radio, indicators, the lot! then it breaks down, i give it a jump start and its ok for a few days, but every few days after that it needed to be jumped. I took it to a garage and they reconditioned the Alternator as they said that was the problem. It was fine for a few days however the electrics still weren't working. I got new fuses fitted and the electrics started to work and it seemed like my car was fixed, a month later and the car struggles to start again, and it starts to completely cut out about 5 minutes after i get it started after a jump. In the end my car didnt even start with jump leads, even after about 15 minutes of trying to give the car power, nothing happened. So, i went and bought a brand new battery cos i won some money on the football. I fitted the battery and the car started working again, my electrics still didnt work, but once i bought new fuses again, everything started working. Finally, my car works, new battery, reconditions alternator and new fuses...

but no. in the past few days my car is taken ages to start, i even have to turn the key twice cos the first time it just turns over but the second time the car manages to kick in eventually and just today, my electrics stopped working again (just the radio and indicators). ive just bought a new battery and got the bloody alternator reconditioned, i cannot afford much more, i was wondering if there was anything i can try to do myself, like, clean something, maybe something is clogged?

Anyway i hope this all makes sense and i just want a bit of advice before i try to find more money to take it to the garage!

Many thanks

Check your earths! Make take them off, clean up the mating faces and make sure they are tightened down correctly. Really simple to do and if it is a bad earth it will solve all those problems.

sounds like main power feeds at the steering lock conector --but if you are not a car person --it will be cheaper to get it to a garage in the long run ==just keep buying parts is not the way.
If i,m right it is a simple job when you know where to look and no parts needed .
Im sure someone on here will give you a complete description of what to do

Thus all sounds like your alternator has given up. Reconditioning the alternator only lasts as a temp measure, it's not a long term fix. Fitting a new battery will fix the problem for a while, but as it slowly gets less and less charge your problem resurfaces.

Reconditioning the alternator only lasts as a temp measure,

Why? logically if the bearings have been replaced along with the brushes & the diode packs, there is nothing different from a new one.

I would be really surprised if the garage has gone to the trouble of replacing the brush pack.

I'd be surprised if a garage did anything other than swap out the unit.

again --don,t go spending money on alternator till you have found out that it is not charging --it will end up more expensive than diagnosis of the actual problem
