View Full Version : 1.1 to VTR

Hey everyone,
I've recently bought my first saxo after having a few years break from French cars, the car is in very good nick and I'm just thinking of eventually dropping a VTR engine in it to make it a weekend track toy or maybe a daily if the insurance is not outrageous.
I was wondering how much work is needed to convert the innocent flat arch into something a bit more lively like a VTR?
Any info that would help me would be appreciated, such as a complete list of parts needing changing on the 1.1 for it to one day be a 'sleeper' if you will.
Costs would be helpful if anyone has done this themselves.
Thanks

Search search search. This has been done many times my friend.
Looms would be the interesting search item. How and if you'd mate the 1.1 to whichever variant of the engine/cabin loom you'd got as a donor.
The less complicated way, would be to simply buy a VTR
Or one that is rotten and transplant it all across, retaining a key for your doors and one to start it ;)

So even if I did do a conversion, I wouldn't need to change the ignition or keys to start the car?

no just need matched immobiliser box ecu and transponder chip (in the key), or skip that hassle and unlock the ecu if you have the donor car

Put the whole VTR engine in (a 3 plug VTR engine will help as it'll have the same sensor plugs)
Use the 1.1 loom and ECU, then get it mapped.
That's the easiest solution.
If you don't want it mapped, you need an unlocked VTR ecu. This does away with the immobiliser.

So really it seems very easy to drop the vtr engine in opposed to a vts engine. I say easy, I mean easy for people who know what they're doing. Is there a guide as a premium member? If so I will invest in the membership.

its no different to fitting a vts, the block is the same, it just has more valves.

On a vtr swap, is upgraded brakes etc required?

For the price of vtrs now, why not just buy one? Bought mine 2 months ago for 300 quid!
If you have a 1.1 and already have a vtr engine, why not stick your block on the bench and spend a little cash on rebuilding/refurbing it? Save for a vtr, dump that refurbed engine in it and keep your 1.1 for spare parts (if you have space) if not, sell the 1.1 and the vtr engine you've pulled out! It'll save you a lot of head work yet you can still learn/play in between!

Ice decided to go ahead and make it a vtr. I've started getting the body kit already and when that's done it'll be onto the engine. I sure will Dan, hopefully you can sort me a good deal.

So....if I did want to go ahead and swap the engines over, and wanted to keep my ecu and loom but just swap the engine components over, would a mapping company simply remap my ecu to match that of a VTR engine?
Also when converting the 1.1 to a VTR, is there anything else that would need swapping apart from:
-Engine (duh)
-Front Brakes
-Front suspension arms inc VTR springs
I am wondering whether I'd need to swap things such as the gearbox, thus swapping driveshafts etc.
I am very much entering foreign waters with engine swaps, I just want to do thorough research before committing. I have plenty of time anyway before I could afford to go through with it.

Much easier just getting a diner vtr mate. Use the vtr loom and power steering rack etc

You'd want the Vtr ecu, much cheaper to swop it than pay for a remap!
Keep it kit free, for the sleeper look!!

Yeah I guess you're right, probably much cheaper and easier. I'm not entirely sure I'd want power steering yet though!
