i dont think there is much you could do to the engine (other than replacing it with a quicker one). the only things i can think of are a decent induction kit - such as the BMC enclosed kit, de-catting the exhaust and putting a new exhaust system on it. i am unsure if you can get a manifold for it, but you never know!
Contact Gaz at GSMotorsport or John at 2Modified as they should be able to tell you exactly what you can get for your car
Hope that helps

enclosed induction wont do much on a diesel
ur best of gettin a new lump in it, or converttin it to vtr

tosser :P
you can start with a good enclosed induction kit or a panel filter. you can play with the fuelling but im not sure how... this can make a lot smoke come out of the back end but provided you dont go too far there shouldn't be much trouble.

waste of time imo.

You can turn up the fueling by tweeking the FPR. Easy apparently and does give a fair bit of a gain. Nails ecconomy though so why bother

Think he had it producing 80hp i remember correctly.

I had one of these first, was vtr replica, wat made a big difference in mine and i mean a big difference believe it or not was just a normal k&n kone filter bit noisy but worth it trust me,my old car was able to toast most 1.1s the origional filter box must really restrict the air flow! i later played with the fuel pump and this made a little difference!afterthis it was stil no rocket but was alot better!

cool thanks for the info man :) I guy on here I spoke to a while back said a similar sort of thing... he put an induction kit on it with a cold feed filter - he timed it from 0-60 and recorded it... did it in just over 10secs.. i was staggered considering the standard car does 0-60 in 16, and open induction kits are poo poo. but im guessing the better thermal efficiency of the engine will have something to do with a cooler engine bay perhaps... im clutching straws here.
for those of you who says its not worth it (they know who they are ;) :P)... I'm guessing an owner of a car with a 4 litre engine would say it's not worth modding a tiny 1.6 and so on... its all relative tbh.

not really, my best mate has a 5.7Ltr V8 chevvy camaro and my saxo is on par with all the way to 120mph, where his 3 speed auto tops out and i keep going :P

Surely the whole point of a diesel engine is fuel efficiency?
Any mod to make the car quicker is almost certain to lower mpg, no? if that's so, then it's pointless having the diesel engine.
(Nowt wrong with diesels, I had a Pug 205 D for a couple of years - ace car!)

exactly, why spend the money on it? if you want to go faster get a 'sport' model car or engine. no point in trying to make 1L or 1.5D fast.

dont agree i was stuck with mine cos i didnt have the money to change at the time, and for only £100 or less get a decent induction kit and a local mecanic to tweak your fuel pump and you wil be laughin! good power increase and a fiver of diesel wil stil last you two days!lol:afro:

Yea, exactly
i dnt have enough money to upgrade to a 'sports' model, and ifi did i would be broke cause of the insurence on it.
Thats why i asked if it would be good idea to quicken up my saxo (cause i love it) lol
thanks for or the help guys, if any one has any more tips just reply

I'm sticking with mine... more assed about mpg than ponies, but as im sticking with the car then i might begin tinkering with it.
let us know how you get on man :)

hey guys! im the guy ad's talking about, i used to own a 106 1.5 diesel.
i made a custom intake in the workshop at uni.. (race car engineering course)
improved throttle response, and as ad said accelaration was much improved i filmed a 0-60 in about 10.2 seconds.
i know a lot of you are saying theres not much point in modding the diesel but if u want mpg and its all you can afford e.t.c then i found this a worthwhile mod to keep me happy till i got my new car!
plus it still did a constant 50mpg with some quite enthusiastic driving, oh and sounded soooo beeeefy!

How did you record this 0-60?

haha ok fair enough it was filming the speedo.. so it was off..
but in terms of driveability it made a noticeable increase

Yes, its completely inaccurate. Tell people it makes it more drivable, thats fine, and useful, if I had a 1.5d I'd probably wind the fueling up, but don't claim completely inaccurate figures

Any chance you could tell us in detail how to create the mod? or similar ways to do the mod paul?
im not very good at cars and engines and stuff, but im learning

Just take out your old air box (the big platic box) buy a cone airilter get two large hose clips, and a piece of hosing(to bring filter forward to get more cold air)fasten the hose to where your old air box was, then the filter to the hose and hey preto, youve got more power! or you could just fasten filter to were your air box was, this wil stil work well but in heat it may lack a little!

I timed mine... standard 1.5D remember.
0-60 took 15.7secs - so thats reading off the speedo.
so we have a like for like comparison or enough to suggest that there is a noticable (and very affordable) performance increase.

Beg to differ. YorkVTR thought I was running about 80hp, he was behind me on the convoy to FCS. If it surprised a VTR owner then im happy.

look on the derv doctor web site mate there loads of derv mods

The stroke on a 1.5d is the same as the 1.6's so are there any performance conrods that could be used and I believe the fitting on a vtr and vts are different so what is the 1.5d and what conrods would need to be used?
Also what is the derv doctors web site?
Cheers

push it off a cliff ;)
LOL! Harsh.
I would of said VTS engine but I think the cliff is the cheaper option.

Why should they be pushed off a cliff when producing 90 bhp and doing 60 to the gallon!?:clapping:

*cough* 95mpg in mine.

Bloody hell have you turned the fuelling down or something!!!
I havn't got one at present as i'm not 17 till the 17th but getting a mini and putting a 1.5d engine in it so jsut doing a bit of reading. Gonna run it wvo and get about 100 bhp out of it the twin turbos and NOS:evil:
Just wondering (aswell as conrods) is it possible to to fit a switch inside to change the fuelling? So one minute your doing 60 to the gallon on normal turn it up doin 40 but extra 30 bhp turn it down and do 120 to the gallon?
Barry123

to be honest dude, this might suprise you but turning down the fuelling often doesnt increase the mpg gains. On the modern derv's - TurboD's with ECU management there are plenty of companies spealising in 'tuning' this engines... basically by carrying out a remap of the fuelling and turbo parameters to take up the slack in the engine tolerance (manufacturers deliberatly underpower the engines in order to maximise reliability). You'll find that aswell as increase the power, torque and throttle response, you could see an increase in MPG's provided its driven correctly.
I did mine super duper figures by concentrating like a mofo on my driving, planning ahead/predicting road conditions further ahead and also a bit of knowledge on engine (such as peak torque, rpms, optimal speed).
Trust me it makes you a better driver as a result - i am possibly the greatest driver in the world now  (joke - but you know what i mean :P)
as the fuelling is controlled mechanically as opposed to modern engines (electronically) you'll have fit an actuator to the fuel pump with the correct settings already known. To be honest it wouldnt be that simple.
personally, I'd increase the fuelling ever so slightly and improve the filtration. might get a few more hp's out of it and wont kill the mpgs.

What about a change of the fuel pump to an electronic equivilant?
