Steve

That a single plug ECU (its like a scart lead connection) a three plug will have three indicidual leads going into it.

If it doesn't look like that you have a 3 plug.

if the cat is on the downpipe its 98
under car 90.

2000 was the last made single plug ecu for vtr.

v reg was not the last.

I have a W plate single plug, and a chrissaxo had an X plate which IRC was that to.

looks 90bhp cant see the cat in the manifold, however go take the plastic cover off the ecu so we can see the plug(s)

Ryan
21st October 2006, 14:45
remove the cover for the ecu so we can see it

Altho looks single plug, inlet looks 90bhp and so does the oil dip stick position.

you have 90bhp and single plug IMO

you may have less bhp, 8! but IMO single plug ecu set ups people have less problems with, especially if they are modding, thinking about an engine conversion etc......

do you not get better mpg out of the 98bhp? am getting 38ish at the moment with a lot of floot to flooring.... then choking it no more than 2k revs sometimes lol

Josh_Phipps

Scott

Josh_Phipps
21st October 2006, 15:20
What could be the causes of my petrol consumption being so terrible?

Scott
21st October 2006, 15:21
funked lambda sensor maybe, causing car to use limp home which basically chucks loads of fuel into the engine to keep it cool and not melt the pistons because the ecu has no idea whats going on within the engine

SteVTR
21st October 2006, 15:21
sell it!

your going to sell it because its 8bhp (that no one really ever notices anyway) down on what you thought it was :fcuk:

mate you need your head looking at :P

Steve
21st October 2006, 15:23
it was a joke lol

Steve

am only keeping it 10 months anyway i think then see what insurance is like on a vts....

Steve
21st October 2006, 15:42
although i have a 90bhp is it easier to de-cat?

Ryan
21st October 2006, 15:44
yes its alot easyer to de cat.

SteVTR
21st October 2006, 15:44
yeah it is because you dont have to change the manifold you just take the cat pipe out and put a normal piece of pipe where the cat was

Steve
21st October 2006, 15:45
sweet suppose there is a bonus to this... i have stopped crying now lol

Josh_Phipps
21st October 2006, 15:46
yea a hell of alot easier, means you dont have to change the manifold for mot time

Steve
21st October 2006, 15:47
sweet... do you see lot of difference from de-catin? lets get this mod done! recommend me a de-cat pipe... cheap obviously!

Josh_Phipps
21st October 2006, 15:49
Magnex de-cat pipe about £55... When i fitted mine its not a massive difference but i felt my car rev'd free-er also sounded alot nicer :P

Ryan
21st October 2006, 15:51
ive got a great de cat...

£600 worth :p

called a BTB :P

Josh_Phipps
21st October 2006, 15:53
Lol BTB is the way forward

Steve
21st October 2006, 15:53
does the car just need jacking up then take the cat out? put taht pipe in place? what's the best diameter? and does the mid silencer stay there?

Ryan
21st October 2006, 15:56
Lol BTB is the way forward

hence why i own 2 :P

Ryan
21st October 2006, 15:57

id recommend getting the expansion chamber one from magnex, think it was for the 106xsi, as you need a front box IMO on a NA tuned car.

and yes it will keep the mid box.

Josh_Phipps
21st October 2006, 16:04
Yes the De-cat will just drop out, ive made a little diagram for you below lol as i was bored... That should explain all

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/2644/decatdiagramsmallcb9.png

The second clamp is an O clamp, The first clamp being 2 springs.... Loosen both clamps and the cat will fall out. Replace with de-cat, tighten springs off you go

as i said try and find the magnex with the silencer.

it A : helps performance (im not going to explain)
and B: looks better if the police check under the car.

as i said try and find the magnex with the silencer.

okie dokie... or i might get a fully system! when it had its mot there is a "minor leak of exhaust gases at the front of the system"
and the pipe after teh mid silencer before the exhaust looks though its about to go as very rusty on the bends!

Ryan
21st October 2006, 16:23
a full system is usually cat back!

Ryan
21st October 2006, 16:24
only a few are manifold back, if you use a system for a manifold (cat) 98bhp car you can de cat, but will not be able to get through an mot without changing the whole system,

Steve
21st October 2006, 16:26
so you think i should get cat-back system? not worth getting a 4 -1 manifold?

Josh_Phipps
21st October 2006, 16:30
Yea m8 you should get a cat back system, Alot of people he would recomend you get a magnex system but as i dont have any experience with them i can really advise you that way... i personally recomend custom. You will proberly pay £50 more but in my opinion worth it, ive got a custom and have no regrets + m8 the cat is a piece of piss to replace when it comes to mot so dont be shy to stick a de-cat in :P

Steve

quite the opposite id never go custom. they are usually shite work, are not the correct pipe diameter etc.... do they ever run a custom on a dyno>>>?? no..

only for of custom exhaust id do is btb, H engeneering etc... your looking for little change from £1400 custom there.

magnex are good for the money.

Whats wrong with custopm m8, I need reasons , Ive got custom and cannot fault it, Its made to how i want it, how loud i want it, how i want it too look... Ive had Peco, Ashley, Powerflow and so far Powerflow is the best, i felt no decrease in performance.. Not that a Cat back system actually gives you any increase in the first place..

pooerflow, seen nothing but faults in the system, cheap steel etc....

different pipe diameters plus restrictions will change the performance of the car etc... especially the front box!

YOU NEED THE FRONT BOX ON A NA CAR!!!

the first box is the most important part of the system, for performance, just putting a pipe in is not allways the best idea! hence why ive said get one which is a box not a pipe.

Stevey i dont think Itsafastworld knows what hes on about when it comes to custom systems.. What the hell are you going on about different bore size, they just make it fit your middle pipe, tehy dont mess around with it mate... have you actually had a custom system or you just going by what a few people have said to you?

Josh_Phipps
21st October 2006, 16:49
The VTR with just a BTB and pro comp seems a bit of waste/ Ive been told you need big specs to make a BTB worth while

my point exactly just made to fit your middle pipe!

you do realise that different bores give different gains in performance, which is why most turbo cars run 2.5 bore at least. usually 3"

I had a powerflow on my track car when i bought it, needless to say it was removed soon!

just making it fit a std saxo center pipe is not a full system is it?? its just a backbox welded on!

also a firend has a pooerflow on a 180bhp saxo on tbs!! ive seen the quality of the work (or lack of it) and he/ the company who installed it also comment on how bad it is, and how its restricting his engine!

Ryan

i was planning on charging the vtr.
as you know how rare a btb is to get hold of i got it when i saw it cheap!

and a BTB is probably overbored for a std vtr!

it has improved fuel economy tho lol

Ryan

build quality wise id also say its worth it :P

Steve

ignore this

Ryan
21st October 2006, 16:59
same reason as to why a 4-1 manifold will have different gains to a 4-1 etc...

the breathing system on a car is not just a case of whacking on anything and expecting it to all do the same job LOL

Yea he obv went to a bad Powerflow dealership as there are many around.. A btb to my knowledge is a 3" bore thats why there best suited to turbo and supercharged cars and seem a waste for poor spec saxos tbh, but if you found one going cheap then fair play, i also do know that they are becoming rarer..

Also It isnt a standard centre pipe
Pro-tech 4-2-1 Manifold
Magnex De-Cat
Ashley Center Pipe
Powerflow Backbox
Green Forced Air Induction Kit

I also have smaller mods like Ported n Polished T/B,

Im not going to fight with you m8 as your intitled to your own opinion and i respect that but alot of people on here find custom exhausts very good and im one of them, again my opinion, Ofc as i own one im not really gonig to slate it, i will stick up for it :P

custom does nothing for you performancewise mate i've had the misfortune of a powerflow exhaust and it was shite the quality of the stainless was shit and the quality of the workmanship on it was even worse, like itsafastworld said custom exhausts are for show queens

they feed you all this bullshit about it been built for you etc and its a load of shit the only type of custom exhast i'd go for is something down the lines of a btb where it is tried and tested and has proven gains

Im not going to fight with you m8 as your intitled to your own opinion and i respect that but alot of people on here find custom exhausts very good and im one of them, again my opinion, Ofc as i own one im not really gonig to slate it, i will stick up for it :P

youve proved your wrong again, 1stly over the v plate being the last 90bhp model and now the btb! go on gmc and find out what the bore is! its not 3" :P

and the de cat is just a standard pipe being put in. there is no silncer box in the link is there???

your saying custom exhausts are good for what??

im stating that most will not be good for performance etc..

custom does nothing for you performancewise mate i've had the misfortune of a powerflow exhaust and it was shite the quality of the stainless was shit and the quality of the workmanship on it was even worse, like itsafastworld said custom exhausts are for show queens

they feed you all this bullshit about it been built for you etc and its a load of shit the only type of custom exhast i'd go for is something down the lines of a btb where it is tried and tested and has proven gains

thankyou someone who knows what they are talking about!

only i maker i know of does a decat pipe with a box init ,as it should have ,as the first box postion is the most important thing as far as tuning the system is concerned, and that maker is discontinuig it ,why cos at £90 ,no one wants one when they can buy a decat at £45-50

a comment there from john of gmc motorsport about the front box.

SteVTR i know what your saying about the BTB and for the money you spend out you would expect gains, but some people cant justify spend £600 on a exhaust

as i said before i think its a magnex for the 106xsi which has the expansion chamber, or maybe mongoose did one to. theyre not cheap tho.

SteVTR i know what your saying about the BTB and for the money you spend out you would expect gains, but some people cant justify spend £600 on a exhaust

and for the money people waste getting a custom exhaust you could get a piper or magnex which both have better build quality than a powerflow, most powerflow backboxes and systems i've seen arent even stainless steel all the way through which make them even worse for the money they charge

if your happy with your custom exhaust then fairplay mate i know i'd rather have a well built exhaust that wont cause me any problems and that when fitted with other performance mods will help rather than hinder performance thats why i'm agreeing custom exhausts arent the best
