Bastard.

Came out of petrol station this morning changed from first to second and i heard a metal rattle noise. Anyway made it towork every so offten hearing that noise when changing.

Pulling into work, parked up and played around in Nuetral, thats where the noise is, like its hitting something makes a lovely loud metal noise. moving it from left to right you hear the noise like metal scrapping.

All gears work perfect never had a problem with the gears at all.

What can it be?

It sounds alittle like the problem i had.

On my gearbox, it was the input shaft bearings.

If you take it to a garage, they may test drive it for you. And if they think there gona get the work, it'll probably be free.

test drive wouldnt be needed. Just move the gear stick left to right and you can hear it.

does your gear stick vibrate/ shake when in gear and labouring? if so it could be your exhast touching the linkage and the joint?

infact yes it does mate, I dont notice it now, but about year and half ago when i first ever borrowed the car i noticed the gearstick movement.

Does the stick have feck loads of movement? If so it could be a fucked linkage. Mine went at french car show. Messy but easy to do.

Does the noise change when you dip the clutch? How many miles on it now?

dipping the cutch when parked up and moving the stick? No the noise is still there and doesnt change.

Its like its hitting something under the car. Car goes into all gears fine and the noise only come when you go into neutal or through it.

Cars on 45k now but i recken 20k of them are motorway miles only.

If its in neutral I'm guessing gear linkage, is the gearstick movement in neutral longer than normal?

Clouds_mate

longer as in wider?

CampDavid

yes :) If its wider I know the answer

To be honest i dont know. Maybe but only a tad not anything stupid.

hmm, By the sound of it its the gear linkage. Get some one to waggle your gear stick and look under the bonnet at the linkage to see what its hitting. I was thinking the ball in the linkage had come off, though this made my gearchange massive when it happened on mine

i would love to look under the bonnet at the linkage but i dont know where to luck. lol

Is the car drivable its iv got a nice 21mile motorway drive home at 4.30 and dont fancy fucking the car over on the motorway in traffic lol.

Also how much would it be to repair? or how hard isit for a noob to do

If its the linkage its no problem to drive. Unless it totally goes then you'll be stuck in gear, though thats unlikely.

If you get someone to just keep moving the gearstick about (engine off but clutch down) then you should be able to spot it under the bonnet, it'll be to the right of the engine as you look at it and it'll be some rods moving about. From then on its common sense, see what its twatting and then check to see if any bits are missing. If you can't see anythng above the car then you may need to clamber under to check there. Again, will be easy to see if someone is moving it about.

Replacing mine took about 20 mins, you do nee to get under the car though (USE AXEL STANDS, DON'T DIE!) and it is messy (its dirty under there) but its fairly easy.

mmmmm. fark.

So if i go to see someone about it yesterday, where would i need to get the gear linkage from? is it from the awesome dudes at Shitroen?

CampDavid

yes, though a brakes will be feck loads cheaper. Mine was 15quid second hand, I'd guess about 50 from citroen, but ask

Check as it may not be fucked, it could just be hitting some debris somewhere and if it only does it when the engine is on it may be something else

does it with the engine off i would imagine.

Seems really wierd. No problems driving to petrol station, full up and started lol.

CampDavid

just the linkage then, I'd check it myself and do it myself, its not that hard, I did mine with no prior knowledge

Clouds_mate

would you say aviod driving the car if possible then?

CampDavid
27th October 2006, 08:49
if its doing it when of and its the linkage I'd say check it ASAP, but driving it will probably be ok, if it does break it won't hurt the car
