doubt it from what i know you'll need to uprate all the cars internals, bigger injectors for fuel demand otherwise the car will run to lean and your turbo will blow.
so sell the turbo and get a smaller turbo

turbo wont blow if it runs leans its the engine that will melt. Turbo would work fine but depending on the size it could be very laggy.
Not just a case of lumping it on though need to sort the fuelling, clutch, engine mounts, brakes, compression etc...

yeah it would be very laggy as its designed to run off the output exhaust flow of a 2l not a 1.6 so wouldnt spool up quick, get a renault 5 turbocarger or simular small turbo such as a punto ihi vl7 turbocharger

It can be done, i heard of 1.3 starlets with impreza turbos fitted! but it all needs to be done properly, and it won't be cheap, as scott said, you need to sort out compression, felling, etc. if its not done properly then your engine's gonna melt like a marshmellow on a BBQ!

ive just got a full turbo set up off a mate who had a 106 gti turbo everythin is in the kit turbo, manifold, all pipe work, intercooler, scatter valve and 2 new head gaskets. he told me to use 2 head gaskets to lower the compresion ratio my car already has cams and a motor sport fuel pump and has been fully remaped has uprated engine mounts and an uprated clutch can i put turbo kit on or would ppl recommend i get pistons first?

you can run it without forged pistons aslong as you keep the boost down, no more than 7 psi at the most, it can be done with 2 head gaskets but thats not a very nice way of doing it the better way of doing it is to use a copper decompression plate from FERRIDAY(01785621710), they have the TU template because he did one for my VTR about 2 years ago.
a word of warning once you start on the turbo route it becomes very adictive to get more power and also very expencive, i have built my own engine and done all the work myself saveing a fortune but my engine ows me the best part of £10k, there are cheaper versions out there but not very reliable and not as powerfull.
whats the trim and AR size on the evo turbo unit??
