drain it all mate. do it properly.
To change the oil firstly run the car for about 10 mins to get the oil warm so that it will flow out nicely.
Get under the car with the correct sump plug tool and a big container to allow the old oil to flow into. Undo the sump plug and let the oil flow out into the container dont worry if you drop the sump plug into the oil you can fish it out later. The oil may be very hot to watch out!
Leave it draining for about 15 mins, or whenever it decides to stop. Undo the old oil filter using the correct tool, apply a little bit of oil onto the threads on the new oil filter and screw it on. Do not use the tool to do up the oil filter it will damage it, just do it up tight with your hands.
Put the sump plug back in and tourque up. Fill up with the new oil, look in a haynes manual as to the amount needed to fill up your engine and put the correct amount in. Run the car for another 10 mins and check the level. Top it up if required. Then remember to check the oil level over the next few days to make sure it is correct. Hope this helps!

You apply the oil to the filters seal... putting it on the thread won't help much (might make it easier to get off again lol)

i'm by no means a pro, but...
freddjud, you say to fill the oil back up after draining the old, and replacing the sump plug. you then say run the engine for ten mins and check the level and top up if required.
BUT,
i was always led to believe that you should only check the oil level when the engine is cold and has been sitting on the level.
just a thought??....
