What is the advantage of buying a Piper / Magnex backbox to one of these jap cans?
Also for best performance should you keep the silencer in the middle pipe (Pipe before the backbox).

There pooh the others are good
Well these are obviously made to just be welded onto any car unlike the magnex and other branded names more than likely make a direct fit system for you. In reality this is alot better and more specifically made for your cars needs rather than for just any old car, not sure on performance side of things but i imagine the likes of the branded system will give the best increase's

Ive got 1 of these mate direct fit 2" bore with a 3.5" tail pipe and doesnt quite have magnex/piper price tag and ive got good gains from my car its up 30bhp from its standard power thats with cams etc but i think this has helped and sounds great
As for the jap cans they just universal fitment that alone makes them suck really alot of chopping and welding just to make it fit

What about the performance side of the jap cans, Am i better off just buying a cat back Piper System?

Cat back is what you need mate you probably wont see any increase at all with just a back box cause you are still restricted all the way back to the manifold and cat, i got the cybox system and its superb quality for the £ and they also threw in a free decat pipe all for that price of £199, personall though the cybox is a bit on the loud side if i was to do it all over again i would purchase the cybox center section for £69 and decat for £40 and then buy a magnex back box.

Nono my system consists of
protech 4-2-1 manifold
magnex de-cat
Ashley center pipe (removed silencer)
Poowerflow back box
I just wanna replace the backbox for something with a bit ore sportier tone.

oh ok i thought you were starting from scratch with it all do you want loud or or subtle but with the sporty tone cause once again the cybox is pretty damme loud and sporty sounding i have a video on youtube you could hear how the cybox sounds personally im now looking for something a bit less loud so thinking of going for the magnex back box but seriously i would stay away from universal fitments like them.

Everything is pointing to the cybox mate as they do 4 different jap can styles so might be worth looking at them, i think piper do jap can style aswell.

Ive always liked the look of those cybox systems. Look well made and the price is good, not too cheap or too expensive.
Proper gay name though wtf were they smoking

Lmao i often wonder would they sell more if they had a different name, your right about fitment and build quality i fitted myn on my drive with no jack and just a socket set and some gum gum just wiggled under the car and had it on in a hour or so was very impressed top quality stainless aswell well worth it.

For ultimate performance on a NA tuned car a small centre box should help with performance but with the small power put out by even mildly tuned 16v (where not talkin about Super cars here) the loss of the centre box would probally be so little you wouldn't notice unless two cars with the same spec where paired up on with centre box one without.
Unless your talking Turbo'd cars or high revin VTEC's then a exhaust will not make or break the car. Manifolds will give you the greatest power gains along with decatin as these are a massive chocke on the engines breathing ablity.
IMO there can only be 5bhp difference between a stock system and a Group N system (Not taking in account of manifolds and air filters which when grouped together will give a bigger gain)

Custom cans don't have to be Chavy Baked bean cans either, I bought a eBay can from the USA its a 3" design and is a nice design IMO.

3" looks right
4" looks ok
5" is to big for standard/sleeper looking cars
As long as its fitted right and not hanging at some god awfull angle then 'Jap' style cans can look ok.

The nearer the size of the opening of the can matches the tailpipe of a Jap style Universal can the less baffles will be in the can giving it a more deep un-silenced tone. I had a dual exit system with two 3.5" cans on my 2.0 16v Cougar before my S and on tick over and below 2.5k it sound like a cossie :-)
Bit loud on a motorway run but a bit of old carpet in the boot and you soon get used too the tone. Miss all the poppin and fartin and it was only cat back with the twin cans, still had OE cat and manifold

At the end of the day its down to personal choice and personally I like them if they are not tooooooo big, think 4" is the limit on a Sax plus it has to be will fitted to, but thats just what I think :-)
