What is the best Airfilter money can be buy regardless of the price? Also halfrauds said to my mate yesterday that an enclosed filter is good but over a long distance the car will feel sluggish because it will become hotter. Is this right? Cheers

No, its bollocks! halfords or Halfrauds as there better known, lack knowledge when it comes to cars! all there capable of is wiring in a head unit, even thats a struggle for some!

Ok generally the rule for Induction Kits or any aftermarket Air filter system is:

Sound - Open Cone (K&N 57i style)
Performance - Enclosed Filter (BMC style)

The reasons for this are quite simple, A open cone filter is more likely to be effected by 'Heat Soak' which basically means the filter will draw un warm if not hot air from the engine bay and lose performance (Cold air is dencer ergo you can get more cold air into the cyclinder).

A enclosed filter over comes this by . . . Yep you guessed it! Enclosing it there by protecting it from Heat and solving the problem of Heat Soak.

WRONG

As I have said in the past ANY kind of filter must have a good quality and quanty of COLD AIR, more so a enclosed filter because even warm air is better that NO air!

A open cone filter will work better than a Enclosed filter if it has a Good cold air feed and some kind of heat shield to keep some (Not all) of the warm air away from the cone and trap the cold air from the cold air feed as near as the cone as possible.

So a Enclosed filter with a good cold air feed will totally out perform an open filter by only drawing cold air.

Goldern rule really is 'No MATTER what type or style of filter you buy you Must make sure that there is a constant supply of cold air otherwise you would have wasted your money.

I would go for bmc or green/simota enclosed mate, open filters are more just for sound unless placed behind the headlight with a good supply of cold air.

sorry everyone my friend doesnt like asking questions on here, he wants to know how much performance he would be looking to get from an enclosed bmc?

On a standard engine over the OE air box setup maybe 3bhp possibly alittle more, to be honest it more to do with a constant gain as a open filter probally will perform equally well untill the engine really warms up then you could start to loose power due to Heat Soak as before mentioned, where as the enclosed filter will/should be protected from the start.

I can get over how important the cold air feed is in all of this, as even a Racing style enclosed airbox would be a waste of time if there is not feed of constant cold air.

Dyno's have trouble backing these gains up as the fans used to blow cool air onto the rad and the induction system cant replicate the force of air been forced into the induction system at real road speeds.

If your looking for best money can buy then Im sure he'll be more than happy with BMC or Pipercross Viper (which is abit more pricey)

one is for the single point injection engine and the other is for the multipoint one.
