Decision on exhausts

Hey i was wondering if you all could help me out. I currently have a piper stainless back box on the car, to put it plainly its dead quiet, its so quiet i could drive through a library and know one would hear it lol. Was wondering which exhausts are the loudest? Ive bin told that ashley competition are good. Any suggestions ?

Piper is usually quite loud, why not get a decat and remove the centre silencer if you haven't already?

I hear alot about these cybox exhausts! They are supposed to be quite loud! I have a magnex and i think it sounds lovely!

nilltek are loud with a de cat but also relativly hard to get.

Really you have quite a large choice open to you.

You can first simply change your centre section to a straight through setup either buy replacing the whole section or simply removing the centre box. This way you could keep you piper back box ergo saving you money.

Second you could totally upgrade to one of the more performance/competion style exhaust both Ashley and OMP make a Mild Steel system which would see very good gains over a standard exhaust setup with just a back box.

OMP also produce a very good system in stainless steel which is ver simalar to the PugSport item, which has a small 2" tailpipe which aids back pressure there by increasing perofmance.

Its worth notin tho that both OMP exhaust replace the cat with a striaght through pipe there by also increasing noise and perofmance where as the Ashley system does not.

The 3rd option is the custom build - have whatever you what exiting where ever you want. Some people feel this option does not offer a good pefomance return but I beleive it depends on the style of exhaust you deside to build. Keep it small bored with a back box under 4" and you should be ok.

Get a mechanic/garage/welder to take the baffle out of the Piper back box!!! A garage in wakey did it to my peco a few years back and it sounded great! Only cost a tenner.

If your looking for a loud but nice note, how about using a small 3.5'-4' universal can - these Jap style cans are loud because they use very little baffles (the interals that reduce noise) if you soucrh one where the outer can is almost as big as the opeing and tailpipe then you will/should get a nice burble almost a turbo tick-over note then once rev your get a very roary note.

Add this to the removal of the centre box for the greatest effect as the note will be more clean and less silienced - dont remove the cat as the cat will aid pack pressure and keep some kinda performance in the exhaust losing the cat will totally make the exhaust striaght through from the manifold and without any kind of box to aid back pressure you will most probally see a loss in performance.

These style of 'custom' exhaust are more to do with style than performance and if you except that then thats fine - Ive had one before and I took it for what it was - a custom exhaust

But for best gains in performance from a NA engine you need back pressure and that is created within exhaust like this one from OMP - note the smaller tailpipe and more compact can. Not to everyones tastes but good performer none the less

A good noisey exhaust off the shelf is the Mild Steel Ashley competion exhaust, good performer and a bargain too at around £150 for a full system check out www.rallydesign.co.uk if your interested in that - with two tailpipe choices 3' and 4'

As long as it doent excede a certain decabell db at MoT time on tick over your be fine.

Check with a MoT station what the Leagal limit is on tick over as I dont think they do the sound test with the car reving :oops: worth checking thou
