enclose kits are the only ones that will make a slight difference, with other mods they work well :y:

open air filter and straight through exhaust gained me 11.45bhp from standard. :y:

not really, myViper sound no louder than my standard air box!

They dont really work imo..

I mean open induction kits :D

car feels a little smoother, and is a bit louder.

I have a BMC on my VTS.

Open kit i found throttle response was jerky and the car was stupidly loud, and if anything....felt slower.

When i put an induction kit on my astra it just made it throaty..

Then i put another cold air feed down close to the road to get the coldest air and that also did f$%k all...

Then i made a Straighter induction pipe and bigger filter and that did f&*k all...

So i pulled out all the interior including door cards except passenger seat and it actually got to 60....

Open filters offer a larger surface area compaired to the enclosed panel filter found in the OE setup but really needs a cold air feed to feed it erm . . . cold air, and possibly relocating in the courner behind the offside headlight to gain performance.

Scoops are good as they shield the engine heat away from the cone but need to be slightly spaced away from the slam panel to get that little bit more air in to them IMO

BMC Offers the best gains at a high price.

All three have been tested on various cars and seen a improvement over standard on Rolling Roads but at the end of the day its more a personal choice as different people recommend different filters for different reasons!

A good air filter should allow the engine to draw extra air into the throttle body ergo improving performance, at the very least it should make the car rev more freely

Filters on their own wont 'seem' to do much on their own But when fitted in conjunction with other mods like a 4branch manifold and performance exhaust the air filter would make a difference if placed and feed properly :y:

I hate my astra and can't wait for it to be gone off my drive, i got new steering arms, front beam, new re-wired most of it, new batt and some Vectra rims and some astra gsi brakes and was ready to put in a 2.0 redtop and then got fed up of it!!! :wall:

hopefully with my VTR ill be able to get the engine bay nicely kitted up and eventually id like to go turbo but going from a 100bhp vtr up to 180+ i think i might end up in a ditch so im gonna progress the power steadily....

mates car seems to have made a difference to throttle seems bit quicker might just be the noise though, hes got saxo furio and a K&N open filter.
looks good too

Nah there not crap but not worth spending over hundred pound on. I have full s/s peco exhuast and used to have a viper induction n it jst made a bit beta sound but i gt rid of it and have a open normal pipercross system n it snds the same and i have found lower revs now have more torque due to easier intake. But if you have open filters one mistake you should not make is not having intake pipes. Open filters need them badly, i dried my engine out to much without them n lost power.

like vts_16v_boy sed, u need to get the exhaust system sorted so the air can get out as fast as it goes in.

A good induction kit will not rely provide anymore power, but it should increase the torque slightly and a minimal increase throttle response.
To get the best from an induction kit, it rely needs to be paired with an ECU remap and other engine mods! You are almost better off spending £30 on a replacement pannel filter!

i saw a test in a ford mag a while back. they had a few types of filters, one open, one enclosed and the other was standard, the standard air box with uprated panel filter and better direct cold air feed. guess which gave the best increase and value for money?? the enclosed came out on top, but the standard box with better air feed and uprated panel filter can second and cost pennies, the thick box helps to keep heat away, i was going to try and mess around with mine and see what it was like. wont do any harm, will only cost a few quid.

got a green cotton enclosed on its way for the vts, i had one on the vtr and loved it :)

Enclosed kits seem to pull better to me? Not by much but you can deff tell.

I bought my vts and it came with an open green filter, i replaced that with a raceland enclosed and damn the difference is very noticeable imo, but i suppose i have gone from one extreme to the other :)

Some good points there, the last one in particular - All Filters need a good supply of cold air (open more than most) The bad points about a totally enclosed filter like the BMC and Viper IMO is that when the car is idelin or not moving the filter is slightly starved of air where as a open filter just draws in air as its erm . . . open. Im suprised you saw no gain from the Viper, but everycar is different - maybe it was the Peco exhaust  sorry couldnt resist

I must agree Id never again pay more than about £50 for a open induction kit, £100+ just for a cone and a adapter is an massive con. Like mention small positive gains can be had from the OE setup with a decent panel filter. Value for money :y:

You could counter perhaps that by saying having X amount of extra Bhp is useless when you are stationary. :p

am going to stick a decent filter in, was going to get bmc but after seeing that people didnt see much difference with bmc think al go panel filter. It says better air feed, how can i so this? relocate the tubing that runs to the airbox? the standard one looks a bit restrictive imo :afro:
