my mate has a nasty rattle on his vts. so we have bought a replacement vts head and are going to fit it at the weekend. we have a new head gasket and head bolts anything else we need. any help or guides on swopping the vts head would be a great help? wil we have to remove the timing belt or not?

yes you wil have to remove the timing belt so it would be advised to fit a new one as ur taking it off, u also need coolant, also an oil change would be a good idea, here is a vts cambelt/headgasket guide i made http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showthread.php?t=65315

its goes onto dowels so has to line up. why do you think its the head causing this though?
also, you will need a torque wrencj to tighten head bolts.

lock the old head and then take it off and then lock the new head to the same sequence as williams said with the dowls as shown in my guide pics

btw, inlet manifold gasket from cit is £37.
you can get head kit from ebay for that. you thought about getting new head skimmed to make sure its flat?
i dont see why the head would be fucked though. and making a rattle. maybe a component in the head but not the whole thing.

the only components in the head that would make a rattleing sound is the cams. but thats not even a loud rattle
have you just guessed that its the head?

Maybe a hydraulic lifter shot?

the lifters not in the head like? we payed nothing for the head! i thought it was the cam so just gunna put a whole new head on. its been skimmed at my work and new gasket etc to go in. if we are gonna try and sort wanted to do everything so its mint. head has only got 22k on it. so we just decided replacing the old head would be best option as car has done almost 65k

i didnt think they were in the head? but to be honest i dont no much about vts engines never woeked on one. we thought that the cam was knackerd or possibly a vavle was shot thats why we bought a replacement head? are we not going about this the best way. iam going to attempt this later on today aslong as my mate has bought all the gaskets. or should we just try and find the problem and foix that. i just thought a replacement head would of been the easiest idea.

could do. is the head complete or are you ahving to swap parts over? what does the noise sound like and when did it start happening? was there any mods done just before it started making the noise?

no mods to engine at all. its like very distinctive tapping quite loud been happening for 3 months so my mate says and got progressivly louder! why he has left it this long is beyond me! and the head is complete all a parts intact and has been skimmed to. the noise is very tappy hard to describe but sounds defo like top end! but i thought that on my almera gti, and then the a bolt in the crank came loose and was bye bye engine and a nasty hole lol
