Hi all
I have got a 1999 T reg VTS. My engine has been in the garage for a few bits drive shaft seal etc. I asked the bloke do you think it sounds a bit tappy? He said yes. I asked him what he thought and he said the head might need replacing 750-800 quid all in!! Is this expensive? Any other possibilities of what the tap could be? It is only really noticeable when cold. It’s been like it for a while now. Will it go pop?

I'll put a tenner on it that a spark plug is loose. Take the coil off and tighten all the sparks to the right torque load.
That should sort it :)

Agree'd, very rare for big end bearings etc to go on TU engines unless they have been neglected.. :y:

Also if it was the big end going/gone it would be knocking when you rev it..

If its not the plugs (will be the plugs) then you would have to speak to a mechanic as none of us on here can here it.. lol.

A lifter most likely, but lets see if it's the spark first

Hydraulic lifter. If it's one of them try an oil and filter change before spending a lot of dosh. They like new oil.

the only thing that is the commom cause of rattleing in the head will be the cam followers.

Spoke the mechanic on fri night and he said it wont be a lifter because its too much of a deep knock. He did say its not really urgent, but just keep an ear out to see if it gets louder. How much would it cost for a new head and maybe cams? Could it be done in a weekend?

it sounds like the lifters to me or possibly the cam followers.
these can get pretty loud depending on how long they are left for.....
