i got some of the buttons done today and here is the guide, i started a new thread as the other one is 8 pages long now, u need a 5mm led and resistor, enjoy

remove the button from the car
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/stevecnet/saxoled/saxobuttonled01.jpg

use a flat head screwdriver to hold the clips back while u seperate the button
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/stevecnet/saxoled/saxobuttonled02.jpg

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/stevecnet/saxoled/saxobuttonled03.jpg

remove the green plastic peice which houses the bulb
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/stevecnet/saxoled/saxobuttonled04.jpg

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/stevecnet/saxoled/saxobuttonled05.jpg

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/stevecnet/saxoled/saxobuttonled06.jpg

next take a LED and use a hacksaw to cut the end peice of plastic off, this helps to diffuse the light and stop it being concentrated and patchy
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/stevecnet/saxoled/saxobuttonled07.jpg

now solder the resistor onto the positive leg of the LED
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/stevecnet/saxoled/saxobuttonled08.jpg

cut the end off the green housing (be carefull its very brittle so hard to cut without it splindering off) then put the led through the housing as the orrigional bulb was
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/stevecnet/saxoled/saxobuttonled09.jpg

fit back onto the switch uni and then slide the button back together and your done
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/stevecnet/saxoled/saxobuttonled10.jpg

and here is the finished result, i will get some night time pics later tonight

MINI UPDATE - CIGARETTE LIGHTER

here are a few pics of the cigarette lighter so far, the standard one is green plastic so u cant use it as if u try to shine a coloured LED in place of the bulb it just makes it all go an odd colour. To over come this i got a clear cigarette unit out of a mercedes benz and fitted that in its place with a coloured LED

Here is the mercedes benz clear one - PART NUMBER A 210 820 00 53

Another awesome guide steve.

If you wanted to change the colour of the front of the button how do you think you would go about it? Iv got a silver console to fit some time and i would rather have the buttons silver too. Would like to hear your opinion on it + you have had the unit to bits so might have a better insight.

I was thinking to drill out the opaque part of it, spray the button silver & then get some opaque silver vynal & print the icon for what the button does onto it in the correct place and size. Then cover the whole front of the button in it so that everything looks about the right colour & hope not too much light will pass through the vynal. If too much does come through i could maybe fill the hole with a little clear silicone or something before i put the vynal over it.

Opinion? ;)

i took the front of the button off when i was looking at the button and from what i can see u are able to pop the transparnet icon bit out as its fixed in from behind the button, i didnt take any pics of that bit unfortunatly but then u can spray the button and put the transparent bit back in

Mystic
29th March 2007, 15:01
One for each of the buttons. The heater console & 'cigar' (u old man) lighter are lit up by 2 clear bulbs shining through coloured covers (steves working on the cig lighter one atm so stay tuned) and i might have alittle plan for the heater console too, although you could quite easily have a bash at making a replacement cover for it in new colours :y:

Off the top of my head there are more inside the elecy mirrors switch on the driverside & the headlight aim switch down thew steering column, dont know what kinda LED is behind them though although im woulnd imagine in both cases its those minature ones again.

done mine :y: no real problem its fairly easy job.I've put in so ones that change colour to see what they look like, looks pritty good imo:y:ill be changing them to blue when i get my new dials,i just wanted to see if they would work tbh. ive got a video i just dont know how to upload it as im a newbie.ive got it on my photobucket just i cant seem to get it to work on here.

rear screen switch was a bit of a bastard,i should of trimmed down the legs before as it was stopping the switch from working properly.ive tucked it al away now and it seems fine.

btw i used a grinding wheel to take down the leds and holder, took seconds to do 5 leds.i found if fiddly to cut them

My problem is, iv got a black saxo & so far the only colour im trying to add to it would be red (calipers etc) so ideally id like to have red lights on the inside too. Red dials & red needles wont go very wel though. Gonna do the switches red still i think but m not sure about the dials. Thats why i was after clear needles & then i could do the needles white

no unfortunatly i cant get anthing that will remove the green filter without effecting the rest so i mean u can get rid off all the filters and have a blank plastic insert and then stick i vynal one on the inside of that so its remails factory loking coz i cant think of any other way to do it, unless u cover the green filter on the icons with duck tape from behind and jsut he the red/blue bits lit up

Right yeh thats what i thought. Can u post up a pic of the heater console lights (my bulb went about 6 months ago, have forgotten what they look like lit up lmao)

I'll have a word with my mate and see what he can come up with. I think the way to do it might be to print a new strip with the images on it to resemble the std one & cut the parts out that are to light up, then get some coloured asetate / vynal and stick it behind the panel and use the std white bulb in there.

Theres a plastic cover that goes over the front of the panel iirc, so that will hopefully stop it looking to messy. Hmmm

In all my time there, i never once had to strip an auto box, just replace it! Especially on the 221's!!!! I always thought my manager was telling white lies when he said the courses were £1000 each.

Must just be the wires getting in the way dude, make sure the wiring is routed somewhere that it wont get caught on anything and allows enough slack for the button to sit back in its place.

Bit of a bump up BUT, ordered these resistors:

http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/resistors-standard-p-380.html?osCsid=da8aa38aad348a3e1d1f8b7ba52a2d42

And these LED's:

http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/blue-12000-narrow-angled-p-1666.html

Now followed the guide, soldered the resistor onto the longer leg on the LED (that is right yeah?) put all the switch back etc, but when i press the button the light flashed once which was very dim then goes off. The light doesn't stay on.

Anyone know what im doing wrong? Only got 2 LED's left now. lol.

For the heated rear screen button btw. Any help mucho appreciated.

I got a white LED, a blue one and a 180R, 220R and 330R resistor and i'll have a play around with them tonight

Out of interest, behind the little red cover thing over the hazard light LED is there a red LED or a clear one?

Predator_R32
15th December 2008, 21:00
i cant remember now mate lol

may well be just a clear one, take the front cover off the switch and try it

NICK2506
15th December 2008, 21:04
I have taken off the cover, behind the cover and the opaque bit of plastic there is like a hard plastic red cap and the LED is behind it.
Ahh dw mate lol I'll just keep the hazards red and make the rear heated screen blue :y:

Went into mercades to get the cigarette lighter and they wanted 27 quid :) so as you can guess i didnt go back to pick it up, especially as the guide doesnt actually say what you have to do to replace the led!

But got some led's so going to have a go at the button in the next few days :)

I did this a few days ago, just oinked out the std light and replaced it with the internats from a w5w 4 blue led sidelight and although it is shining through the green plastic it still lit up bright blue!?! ftw...

Ordering some heater dial's after x mas and when i have it all back off again then il take some piccys!

At a guess you have wired the wrong resistor to the led and when its activated its blown either the led or the resistor...
The ones you need are Blue 0.4watt resistors, the brown band on the resistor should be closest to the led and you should generally find that the positive led leg will havea small straight bit of metal inside the plastic casing, the negative should be lower case 'r' shaped

Hope this helps... or just use a power drill battery and see what way it lights up... so long as its not more than 15 volts drill...

www.phenoptix.co.uk are a great company for buying led's and SMD's! highly recommended!

has anybody else had the following problems with the heater and hazard switches...

- the rear heater doesn't get brighter when you press the button
- Led in hazard switch only works when the ingition is on - same for the indicators
- Hazard switch goes back together, but is very stiff to push and it wont work properly....

Any ideas.

I'm tempted atm, to put them back to standard as they're frustrating me a bit :(

The leds wont get brighter as they are already getting enough power on the illumination power feed (without pressing the switch) to light as well as they can... so thats normal! You could make then get brighter but it would be more hastle than its worth!

I think my Hazards flash when the ignition is off, not too sure there tbh

Ah now I had the same problem as you with the hazard switch and i used the wire attached to the std bulbs as its really thin and it stopped the switch fouling on the wiring! or maybe your putting the face back on the switch the wrong way round? cant remember if its physically possible though?

Noddy
12th January 2009, 22:10
i know that the hazards do work (before) when the ignition is off. Although they dont at all atm, i'll have to take the switch apart again tomorrow to check its gone back right.

The LED was fouling the movement of the switch so that parts all ok now.

Thats not a problem with the heater switch, if its on, it auto cuts out after 12mins anyway...

I'll have another look tomorrow and report back :y:

Went to a Mercedes garage this week after the cigaratte lighter but the part number has changed. The guy I spoke to told me it was from a Mercedes E-Class 210 (96-02) car. Is it a direct fit for the saxo as in the wiring plug the same and what type bulb does it need? Can anyone shed light on this?

any cig lighter will fit mate all the same size hole
