will replacing the standard back box alone for a performance one actually imprrove performance? if so what should i go for and what should i pay

Just a back box on a R or S will pretty much just increase the noise and look good, most of the restrictions in the R and S exhaust system is the Manifold and the Cat.

If your not too worried about brandage and having a slightly noiser exhaust why not look at an Ashely exhaust system, these come in mild steel and are pretty cheap but have been proven to performe very well.

check out www.rallydesign.co.uk you can almost get a full cat back system for the same price of a stainless steel back box.

Worth a look even if you dont buy one.
