Oil Cooler

VTS running with High Lift cams, Oil gauge tends to be just under half or just over, would it be worth getting an oil cooler?

Would be looking at the Mocal one with thermostat.

You might aswell as it will stop your oil overheating therefore preventing engine failure.

I have just bought one for my westy and thats standard apart from 4 branch and cat back..

It eliminates a problem that may occur so i would. :)

im looking at getting one, but a mate ssut fitted one to his 306 rallye, witht eh thermo sandwich plate and it over cools he says. apprantly they let 30% oil through to filter or summat?

overcooling engine oil is as bad as overheated engine oil. The oil needs to get over a certain temperature to lubricate the engine effectively.

First fit an accurate temperature gauge and that will tell you whether you need an oil cooler or not. Certainly if the standard gauge isn't even over half that would indicate that one is unnecessary

simple way round it is to fit an oil cooler with a thermostatic plate (usually 82degrees).

this only then activates over this temp, allowing normal runnin conditions up to that temp in which the flood gates open and allow the cooling.

my engines pretty much standard and mine sits at the same level mate

slightest bit under in town driving, motorway driving goes just over

Is just over ok? When i went for a spin (bit of hard driving) it krept upto 3/4.
Is there a safe maximum on the VTS gauge?

Seems pointless on a westy to be honest... modded vts, i.e. cams or anything over then it may be worth considering :)

Its not really pointless as losing oil pressure is the main cause of an engine dying. Also partly worn engines are more prone to it obviously, it was £140 so not really alot and its going to eliminate probs that may have occured.

I've had "many a" spirited drives in my old westy engine and the oil light never came up then, in fact its the water temps you should be watching / spending your money on as i had 3 different high temp warnings on my ecu when it was checked - and that was with a decent rad!

Take a good oil and you wil reduce the temperature ....
