View Full Version : Type R vs Coupe 2.2 16v

Having a toy with a fella this morning early doors on the M1, He was in a civic type R and i was in the coupe...

No really difference, ,he couldn't pull away things looked pretty even...

Was he trying? I thought a type R would leave mine for dead!

VTS_16v_Boy
2nd May 2007, 10:49
Hmmmmm, are you sure he was really trying? Im not soo sure a 2.2 Astra would be able to have troubled a Civic TypeR.

After all the R is pushing 200bhp Im sure a 2.2 Astra puts out nowhere near as much as that, the only Astras Id say could give the R a good run for it money are the SRi Turbo / GSi.

Not saying I dont beleive you just I would have thought the R would have been able to leave you for dust.

top end it wouldnt suprise me if you were about level, because theres not alot to 60 between a VTS, Coupe Astra 2.2 and a Civic.
personal experience of course

Ryan21
2nd May 2007, 11:03
It was around 6am, we both joined at jnc 33 going down the slip road, I hit 120 before the end of the slip and we we're level, mine is standard pushing 160bhp...

I also feel it should have slaughtered me, but we we're neither here or there!

It was more top end driving as i was doing 60 when we joined the slip road.

Maybe a dead start i would have had no chance!

Made me smile though lads!

The type r would have done you tbh.. He may not have been pushing it hard or maybe just a shite driver.. My bro had a type r, would pull 160mph on the clocks!! Obviously it was abit out but they are soemthing else those type r's. Not saying the astra is slow but its not going to match a type r imo..

andyvts98

he will have been trying. standard type r are no good top end i can pull on them in my 52 reg vts

2 very different opinions there, if he wasn't trying why we're we level around the 120 mark...

Rolling start at 60, both caining it, no1 really had the edge!

VTS_16v_Boy
2nd May 2007, 11:09
Did it have much left in it at 120mph (your Astra)?

My Cougar 2.0ltr 16v touch'd 130mph on a private road alittle bit more left not much and I was running outa private road

Ryan you massive boy racer! lol :P

He was a cocky bastard, came right up my arse then pulled out, the green eyed monster kicked in and i dropped it down, the astra pulls 115mph in 4th so it was at redline down the slip...

His face was a picture, BTW He eased off first!

:err: Sorry Im not sure I agree with that in the slightest.

Mines running a Green enclosed filter, 4-1, sports cat, single box system with Group N style back box, and stripped interior and there are things quite abit slower than typeRs I CANT keep up with and its not for NOT trying

True, but your astra wouldnt be as quick as a type r imo..

My bro's clio 182 cup would be quicker than the astra and they aint quite as quick as a type r..

I aint on about Clio's either bro, rolling start (60) to 120 no difference between them, You have to be caining it to hit 120 in any car!

Couldnt agree more, some people think VTS's are the best thing since sliced bread, and yes they are good Very Good - For their Class!

The VTS and Type R are in completely different classes of cars and even a slightly modded S would have trouble keeping up with a R.

I mean take the other day I was coming onto the begining of the A13 London bound at Canvy and a Focus ST (New 2.5 Vovlo Turbo) cam rite up behind me. I put my foot down and saw 120mph before moving over as thats just silly speeds, I think he was suprised to see how well I took off but he had the extra ponies and legs - Like I said different class!

Bare in mind the Civic Type R suffers from a fair bit of transmission loss. But not enough, for a astra to keep up with it lol

VTS_16v_Boy
2nd May 2007, 11:24
Back slightly on topic

Standard both out the box from a standing start I feel the R would have it.
On a rolling start although there maynot be much in it I still think the extra say 20bhp between the 2.2 Astra 160bhp and the 2.0 R around the 180bhp would have it.

Id say the Civic would be lighter than the Astra too, I reckon we need Mr Chris on this thread as he's got a Astra Turbo and he'll be able to shead some expert light on the matter.

Is he online at present?

MaRiO89
2nd May 2007, 11:24
TBH chaps some of you are talking about modified VTS's, do the same to the type r and bye bye!! Standard VTS against a type r and you'll get beat.

These threads do my head in TBH!! I just cant see how people think that a 1.6 that revs to 7250rpm and produces 120bhp is going to touch a type r which has 6 forward gears so nice close ratio's, revs to 8500rpm and produces 200bhp when its there..

As for the astra against a type r, not a chance imo. Must have been a shite driver tbh..

to be honest i much prefer the 172 cup over a type r, has anyone actually joined the type r owners club, i thought a saxo was bad for faults but bloody hell i was wrong type r's have more problems for example

Dodgy steerting racks
Dody gearboxs
Rear camber problems
shit paint problems
Dealer problems

Stick with french i say

Well a saxo 1.4 VSX, is a pure bred sleeper built by citroen. The VSX stands for Vince's saXo

Oh what they hey, I will let you in on a little secret. Did you know that citroen got the names VTR and VTS from the name vince. Let me show you -

VTR = Vince's Tasty Ride or Rizzle depending if your from Barnsley ;)

VTS (my favourite one) Vince's Tasty Saxo.

Coincidence? I think not

TheMadSaxo

No chance.

If you kept up with a Type R there's something wrong there. Car specs, road tests, anything you want will tell you that. Type R is LOADS quicker.

2.2 Coupe is no quicker than a Vts through the gears.

i very much doubt an astra 2.2 coupe would beat or keep up with a civic type r, i have been a passenger in both and they are worlds apart.
no offence mate, but i think you raced with someone who didnt like the idea of driving on a motor way at 120mph and dropped his ass and backed off. i would think the astra turbo would be able to keep up.

as for the vts vs type r saga: my modded mk2 vts can keep up with my mates type r till 60 - 70mph then he is off, aint no way i can catch him.
the type r power is far greater than the vts and he just leaves me. same goes for the clio cups, they leave after 70ish too.

may be a different story if your running cams and TB's, but a standard vts will not push a type r or clio 182 etc along the road.

unless of coarse the person driving the type r is a pussy lol
