View Full Version : I tried searching but found nout - Engine Conversions 8v to 8v
i have a 1124cc 8 valve engine currently in my car.
I looked at a gti conversion but the whole wiring loom put me off doing it myself seeing as its 8v to 16v conversion.
If i put a Rallye engine in instead (8 Valve)
is it a straght swap? As in no need for a different wiring loom from a base model 106?
Also, will it work wil my current ECU or is it best to source a full Rallye engine with ignition, ECU and engine etc

Ive not heard of anyone doing a 1600 8v conversion as you know everyone goes for the 16v conversion. People must have done it as there must be loads of good 1600 8v's out there, maybe not as many Rallye spec units but might be worth sourching a 8v VTR lump and going from there.
sounds like a plan.
otherwise its £1400 + the cost of a GTi/VTS lump
It rather just spend the £500 on the engine and put it together myself without all the worry of the electrics/immobilisor working properly

I would try a VTR lump, source a full engine with wires ect just incase but i cant see why ur wiring wont work with a vtr lump.
Jesus.
they're cheap as chips. Even if i get it wrong its worth a try :)
A learning curve.

if you do go for a vtr engine make sure you get one on the same year as your car because there are 2 or 3 diffrent looms on the diffrent years with the change of the rocker cover colour
cheers man.
thanks for the advice :)

The beauty of the R 8v engine is the Rallye engine is not that different really and the inlet manifold can be changed as well as the cam etc.
For that kinda money you could chuck a 4-2-1 inthere aswell and a enclosed induction kit either non-branded BMC style or RaceLand Scoop.
As for Rocker covers
Phase1 VTR Black Top 90bhp
Phase2 VTR Silver Top 98bhp - The Phase2's had the cat in the manifold where as I asume the Phase1s had the cat under the car like the S's
