The vertical pipe, that goes from the back of the cam cover area? It's got something to do with pressure / vacuum basically. Think about it in terms of the pistons moving up and down. When you are on the intake stroke (piston moving down) the air trapped underneath the piston needs to go somewhere, and also, when the piston moves up, it will need to draw air in underneath too. I believe this is what the hose is for...

If you are reffering to the pipe that an 'Ekotek' valve would be fitted to it is part of the operation for the brakes

The vacuum pipe is used to power assist the brakes… behind your master cylinder and reservoir, the round metal bit is a vacuum booster… one side of this is connected to your brake pedal, the other your master cylinder… in the middle is a diaphragm – both sides in a vacuum... when you press your brakes, atmospheric (higher pressure) air is let into one side of the diaphragm, which sucks the master cylinder closed (multiplying the force that your foot applies to the master cylinder)

I believe these ecotec valves work by letting atmospheric air into this vacuum supply so that the engine isn’t producing a vacuum 100% of the time, supposedly this reduces the work done by the engine and increases the economy… in my opinion they are a load of bolox and I wouldn’t bother – if they are that good why wouldn’t manufacturers fit them as standard? I’ve seen someone with one fitted and it didn’t seal properly and his brakes didn’t work too well! Not worth the hassle
