Can not get into reverse (astra mk3) 1.6

Hello a friend of mine is haveing a slight problem, thing is he carn't get the car into reverse, Id say about one time out of ten it will go into reverse.

All the rest of the gears are fine its just reverse.

I think it may be a loose linkage or something like that eny ideas ?

I had the same problem with mine. i could be worn or damaged linkage. i changed all of mine whilst i was down there and now it goes straight in.

Does the car go into everyother gear ok?

Does the Clutch bite ok?

Does it goe into reverse with abit of work and clutch grinding?

If both answers are YES then have the linkage checked I shouldnt imagin reverse would have failed ie lost a gear.

Have the linkage check then take it form there. Vauxhall boxes are normally quite good.

ive had this problem, was my clutch that needed replacing......

Worked sweet as a nut when it was changed!

Clutches are expenise if thats not the problem.

Id still reckomend have the linkage check first before just replacing the clutch. Surely a Clutch problem would show up in all gears not just reverse.

If you take the car to a gearbox specailist they will be able to let you know what the problem is, if the clutch if not slipping or your having no other problems with the other gears dont be talked into having a replement clutch.
