im looking at buying a mk1 vtr to replace my 1.1 but some have the gold top engines and some have the black top engines. what i would like to know is what year did citroen start using the gold top engines in saxos? or were they only used in mk2's?

cheers, John.

they never did a gold top, you mean a silver top. i think the silver tops came in around s reg mk1. there are 2 versions, 90 bhp and 98bhp. the 98 version was introduced arond x reg, and had a 3 plug ecu and a cat in the manifold. some early mk 2's have the 90bhp engines in them and have the single plug ecu and the cat under the car.

by gold top i meant the 98bhp model engine. so they never put the 98bhp engine in the mk1, not even the 99 models?

no. sept 2000, x plate was the first 98 versions. mk2 on v and w and some x plates have the 90 bhp version. you can put the 90 and 98 in your car though.
