I would either get a magnex or a piper.
Magnex:

exhausts are purely personal choice mate! don't let someone else decide what exhaust system to have. people have different needs, some like big and loud some prefer small and discreet, at the end of the day you have to live with it!

my gf's magnex was an easy fit!
tbh though mate, go custom! that way they will make it sound and look exactly how you want it! ;)

do you know if they are any good

you get a lifetime guarentee, but they are stainless steel, so will not rust!
some people aren't keen on them, because they reckon that the bore size isn't big enough! i have a 2" powerflow cat back system and couldn't be happier with it tbh!

are the big names like magnex and peco and scorpian etc mostly better than the custom made ones?
on quality etc

well i wouldnt say peco are good tbh, magnex, omp, piper and scorpion seem to be the most popular with saxo's/106's

they are all stainless steel so quality is more or less the same

My magnex is not all made of stainless steel. The pipework is mild steel. It was easy to fit but a bitch to stop it knocking on the heat sink!

yeah some are made from mild steel and some stainless steel obviously your gonna have to pay more for the stainless but its going to be worth it in the long run
Just had longlife cat back system fitted last week on my VTR. Top job, sounds sweet.
Whole system was £290.
Back box was £195
