Depends on how much you want to spend?

But there's different stages.

Exhaust, manifold, filter

Then add cams re-map (think this is around 140 -145bhp)

Then throttle bodies

But I don’t know what the gains are on the 1.6 8v valve engine unfortunately

with a new manifold, full system, decent induction kit, fast road cam and remap your looking at around 115-120bhp. alot of people will tell you that for the money you will spend on the above modifications it is just worth putting a vts lump in, but thats up to you.

tb's mate but then you are talking about spending quite alot of money. with throttle bodies you are probably looking at around 145bhp. to run tb's you will also need a stand alone management system as well.

Ah knew I saw the 145bhp figure on a VTR aty some point.

As said your better getting a VTS engine. With all the about you'd see around 170 and TB car's drive amazing!

How much time and money have you got?

If you got the money you can go silly, but in the real world £500-£1000 will see you with a decent airfilter, manifold, decat and decat back exhaust. If your less picky with brands or shop around for second hand items you maybe able to allow for a decent clutch to be added and possibly decent tyres.

Athough these wont add horse power they will improve grip and lose of power that you may have but otherwise be lost.

Breathing mods is a good place to start. If after all that you still want more power either further tune the 8v with turbo's, super's or throttle bodies.
The 16v conversion is the best value for money tuning option but most people buy an 8v for insurance reasons, swap for the 16v lump and you might as well have just bought a 16v in the first place.

My truthfull advice is to play with the 8v stick to simple breathing mods and enjoy the car. If after a year you still want more power then look again at what is most cost effective including insurance increases . . .

Engine swap or swap of Car

There are a few blown R's on here I think try the search button but if that is not help just put in turbo VTR into youtube search.

Look to compines like GMC, Jam-sport, Cituning, Pug1-offs and Carworx for turbo/supercharging and throttle bodies.
