they don't look very big tbh after looking at Alex's on the way to Germany, but i'd probs say you would be able to cram in about 50 litres into it

my light was on on friday, i brimmed it with £40 of unleaded, about 42.2Litres or something, so that plus a 5ltr reserve would take it over the claimed 45litre capacity. That did actually cross my mind, trust you to post it, geek ;)

mate, i think you have a hole in your fuel tank, i checked the haynes and it says the same,

might just be out of date though, on vintage saxo's though

incorrect... mass produced car made as cheaply as possible... it wouldnt be cost efficient to make separate fuel tanks for various bits of the range IMO.

the receipt says otherwise innit.

Ryan: actually the tank dimension may not differ but as far as im aware the fuel pump for petrol driven saxo is in the tank, whereas on the derv its in the engine bay. I doubt that makes up a 2 litre deficit though.

There were 2 sizes of Tank fitted were there not? I think the mk1 VTS tanks hold 35 litres but they upped it to 45 litres for the mk2s?

Not sure about other models though ;)

bit risky doing that with a desiel, shouldnt run them that low !

in the words of armand von helsink...
why why why?

i havent filled my tank with sand in long time.. the car recently had a service, fuel filter changed and that. thats the only reason i can think of as to why i wouldnt want to go that low hoppers.

i didnt check to see the pics ad, should of known you would have some kind of proof

been convinced for a while that the tank was a lot bigger than the 45litres stated... just needed proof.

No because if you get air into the fuel it fuck's up with a desiel but with a petrol it doesnt matter. i dont know the technicallities of it all, but desiel engines i have been told not to run low.

Yates

ummmmmmm all i know is because the fuel pump is in engine bay as opposed to the tank there is a problem with starting a derv if it has ran out of fuel.

then you have to prime it using the squidgy thing in the top right... (bottom left of the right strut)

If i had the faintest inclination it would do damage, no matter how small, to the engine I wouldnt have done it.

:)

Hopcraft
3rd July 2007, 13:33
well yes, something like that, running out of desiel its not as easy as filling back up, you have to run something through it to make sure there is no air going into the engine as with petrol's, when you run out you can just top up with petrol and away you go, hence why i would not run a desiel low !

sayer mate, i do have a question i filled my lil brum brum up the other day using your 'method' fill til it clicks do it again and then dribble it in til its full (no innuendo's intended!) and happily went on my way with an extra 45litres of the good stuff to boot (had 5 in before i filled her so 50litres in fact! which answers your question of yes it must be a bigger fuel tank!)

anyway on to my question if i absolutely brim my fuel tank can it do damage? my brother says you shouldn't fill it full like that as the fuel needs room to 'breathe' as such is that true?

sorry for the essay cheers dude :y:

cheers :A:

Ive heard this aswell, the petrol needs some room to expand with any heat generated, so never fill it to the brim, might be wrong though :panic:

interesting question man. I've always brim filled mine for as long as i can remember without any troubles. however my sisters old polo suffered some crazy failure when the pressure from the fuel pump had caused the tank to deform! although she never brim filled hers. so i cant imagine what happened on that.

Steve, im not entirely sure the expansion due to heat would cause any noticeable difference. you'd need some huge (unrealistic) heat to see anything happen but in addition the surroundings (such as the tank) would also expand so the overall effect is limited.
